Chuck Todd has the personal charisma of leftover oatmeal. Seriously, I've watched his election coverage for years, and basically, he is only really known for his inability to make a point except with a whiteboard.

/Tim Russert used whiteboards, too, sometimes, to make a point, but he isn't dependent on it.

2014-08-15 08:52:47 AM
So that must be why I stopped watching it, after going hoarse from screaming, "WHY DID YOU NOT ANSWER THIS MOST OBVIOUS FARKING QUESTION?"

2014-08-15 08:53:24 AM
"ask" dammit!

I'm just glad that the moronic David Gregory is out.  He was entirely noncombative, uninterested in followup, and had only the most superficial understanding of what was going on in politics and therefore was utterly unable to actually challenge false statements.  And, there was the utter lack of any kind of human perspective on some of the things that were said in front of him, where he would just nod while politicians said reprehensible things.

The worst part is that I remember being on Fark when Gregory took over, and I remember people predicting these exact flaws are the eventual outcome.  We all knew that he was going to fail miserably.  It's just sad that the executives felt the need to almost drive Meet the Press into the ground to prove it.

THIS.

I actually had hopes Gregory would stop lobbing softballs and ask the obvious hard questions and hold politicians feet to the fire in terms of answering those question and not letting them get away with doing that annoying pivot thing.

Dashed long ago now.

I don't have particularly high hopes for Todd but I'm willing to give him a chance.

You would think that with his immunity from prosecution for violating the law, David Gregory would have had more backbone:

www.csmonitor.com

That's a violation DC law:

http://dccode.org/simple/sections/7-2506.01.html
(b) No person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm. For the purposes of this subsection, the term "large capacity ammunition feeding device" means a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition. The term "large capacity ammunition feeding device" shall not include an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with, .22 caliber rimfire ammunition.

And he didn't get permission from the DC police ahead of time:

"NBC contacted [D.C. police] inquiring if they could utilize a high capacity magazine for their segment. NBC was informed that possession of a high capacity magazines is not permissible and their request was denied. This matter is currently being investigated." A police spokeswoman confirmed that the e-mail was authentic.

One can only conclude that David Gregory was untouchable, from a law enforcement perspective, so why not go after the rich and powerful?

Or was he untouchable *BECAUSE* because he didn't offend the rich and powerful in DC?

2014-08-15 11:24:53 AM
He sure did get answers!

To questions like, "Would you like to be on my show?", "Please?", and "How are you today?"

2014-08-15 11:32:45 AM
Huh.

I didn't think it was possible to get someone more spineless than David Gregory to host Meet the Press.

But here we are.

There's youtube video of Chuck farting on the air, so he's got that going for him.

I'm guessing McCain will be leading his orientation.

Gregory was out of his depth, but Todd won't be any better. I would've gone with either Gwen Ifill or Mara Liasson.

So when will we be seeing David on Fox News?

None of them care about truth; they care about the narrative.  The horse race.  The drama of office.  They're happy, even proud, to be the grease in the gears of power.  What work the machine is doing, be crushing people or mindlessly wasting energy is not their concern.

dittybopper: Or was he untouchable

Wow ditty, great transition. But this isn't today's gun nut thread, so shuffle on home.

Tim Russert died and Sunday morning news lost every shred of cred it had left. It doesn't really matter who's hosting now, if you crave sustenance from the media that bad you'll probably believe anything.

The only difference between Chuck Todd and David Gregory are the speed and angle at which they orally gratify their GOP guests.

2014-08-15 12:42:14 PM
David Gregory: "Polls show that Republicans are ..... while Liberals are...."

Yeah, Satchel mouth, the two parties are Republicans and Liberals.

Our ratings are tanking under David Gregory-- He leans right and allows everyone to spout talking points instead of addressing the few pertinent questions he asks!
We need to turn this around 180 degrees!  I know!  Lets bring in Chuck Todd!

Actually, I am home.

And while I used a gun example, because hey, that's what I know about best, the larger point I was making stands:

Or was he untouchable *BECAUSE* because he didn't offend the rich and powerful in DC?

It's the same reason why CNN softballed Saddam Hussein:  You don't get access if the powerful people you want to interview perceive that you are against them.  And to journalists, access is *EVERYTHING*.  You don't have access, you don't matter, because you won't be interviewing the president, or important senators and representatives, or other high government officials.

Remember what happened to Dan Rather, after his *VERY* antagonistic interview with Bush I prior to the 1988 election?  He was PNG'd at the White House for the next 4 years.

I'm sorry but who the hell watches the Sunday talk shows anymore unless someone says something controversial?  They're nothing more than glorified infomercials for the politicians who want to shill their ideas and it's paid for by the networks.

is there any way we can 'Beat the Press'??

they need to get back to real Journalism and stop letting their Executive News editor manager dicks tell them what can be aired and what cannot.  iow. what is news and what is not.

so much for the 'Free and Independant Press' that Thomas Jefferson said was a requirement for having a Democratic Republic.

we don't have news now, we have Public Relations.

No.

He wasn't "untouchable because he didn't offend the rich and powerful", he was not prosecuted because of the optics of locking up journalists speaking on politically controversial issues.

I agree, the brilliance of Russert was he got you on the record. He was not there to make a point or win an argument just made sure you were not lying and use what you said in the past so you could not lie about what happened or is happening. Russert was a lawyer by training and he cross examined people, but did so so fairly even guys like Rush respected him. Cheney may not have been a fan though :)

Todd was Russert's protege so I expect it might be watchable again.

What did everyone expect Todd to say? Certainly not the truth --"You sucked and you look like Lurch." You have to respect their corporate culture. TV stations are usually quite kind and forgiving in public as soon as they change the locks on the studio door.

In 1986? When they hired Chris Wallace in 1987?

It's been so long I think people have forgotten the whole GE boogeyman thing came from Olbermann pissing off FoxNews so bad they went after GE because they could not stand to say Kieth's name. The GOP national convention was even chanting "GE" in hated.

"Go along Get along" journalism is pretty rampant.

Gregory may be an example of it but he is just one example.

I agree that David Gregory should have been canned LONG ago.

We shall see what Tim Russert can do. It's too bad--Back when Chris Hayes had a Sunday Show, he looked like a perfect guy for Meet The Press. Oh well.

GE hasn't owned any of NBC in over a year, and only hasn't had majority ownership for about 5 years.
The problem isn't "corporate ownership" of TV news.  That's always been the case  It doesn't help anything, but if people were demanding Cronkite they'd get Cronkite.  But we're not. People are demanding this retarded "derpyderp there's two sides to everything so you have to let everyone have their say and all opinions are equal" shiat and that's what we're getting.

Tim Russert was better than anything they've tried dumping on the public since he died. He wasn't the Messiah or anything, but we're going downhill.

And it's been said multiple times here, but Sunday morning tv isn't rife with reputable sources.

Not that David Gregory is any good, but Chuck Todd is farking AWFUL. At EVERYTHING. Aside from Ed Schultz (and, to a lesser extent, Melissa Harris-Perry), Chuck Todd is the worst "talent" on the network. Why not Andrea Mitchell? Why not Steve Kornaki or Chris Hayes? Hell, I'd take Lawrence O'Donnell over Chuck Todd. Why not a wet cardboard box with Tim Russert's face drawn on it in Sharpie? Anyone but Chuck Todd.
