I spent 2 hours on a remote connection with a MS rep and HE couldn't make Defender work with my system.

If it's going to do that so often, they ought to program it to do so quietly. fark me for wanting to confirm what Update is putting on my machine, right?

How does Mint compare to either Ubuntu or Fedora Core? I use Fedora on my Linux box, mostly because Ubuntu would be real glitchy with the wifi and graphics cards.

I use mine to replace a Roku 1 for Netflix, the wifi in is much better than plugged in Ethernet on the Roku. You can block ads in IE(google search it). I know use it more than my mini, sense I don't care about a million memory hogging apps.

If that's your only concern, you could run a scheduled task to keep Windows Defender up to date separately from everything else.

Something like this in a .vbs script being called every few hours by Scheduled Tasks would probably do the trick:

set shellObj = createobject("wscript.shell")
shellObj.Run("""%ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe"" ""-SignatureUpdate""") , 0

It's similar to something I use on one of our servers to make sure it keeps a shaky program running.

I use the workaround for blocking ads, the do not track lists, but it's still not as good as adblock plus. And the thing that annoys me with the metro version of ie is when you swipe right to go back to the previous page it comes up grey'd out and you can't click on anything for ages, far longer than it would have taken just to reload that page.
I've read workarounds to fix that but nothing works. And weirdly the desktop version of ie on the RT doesn't have the issue.

They probably have corrupted drives and should run a surface scan or check their power supplies. at any rate that's not a sigificant number. I've never had a problem with automatic updates.

It's nice to see they've decided to abandon a further update to 8.1, which is so desperately needed, to focus on Windows 9.

I'm sure they'll provide a free upgrade from 8.0 and 8.1 to Win 9.

TFA mentions, and even links to another article, that MS have decided to release updates as and when rather than hold them back to release in one big update. This update included two non-security updates.

And they sold 8 to 7, Vista and XP users for $40, and there are rumours of similar, or even free, upgrades for 9.

Either way I'm generally terrified of updates as many of them have screwed up my PC.  8.1 was a disaster when it first rolled out.

I've even had their mouse and keyboard software update prevent my PC from starting up.

Rings a bell. But I love it. As I said after using it and checking out some Youtube videos I am more and more impressed with what it can do. Like I mentioned above it can run dual desktops with an external monitor or HDTV and run different apps on each screen.

Yeah the app store is lacking compared to Android or Apple, but look at what it has that the iPad doesn't:

Separate user accounts. Multitasking. Kickstand, USB socket. Expandable memory with micro SD. Plug in keyboard/cover. Stereo speakers. Proper versions of Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint and Onenote. Dual monitor desktop. Separate versions of programs like mail, IE, Onenote for touch use and for keyboard/touchpad use. Live tiles.

Criticising it for not being able to run traditional desktop software doesn't make any sense since neither can Android or Ipad tablets.

I hate Metro on my PC. I think I have recommended Classic Shell in every Windows 8 thread on Fark. But I love the surface and Metro works great on it. It's not that intuitive but give it a day or so to get used to it and it's great on a tablet.

I try out the top 4 or 5 linux distros' every major release (from distrowatch) in a virtual box VM. Sometimes the host is Ubuntu (12.04), sometimes it's Win7.

Mint 17 would not complete installation as a guest under either Ubuntu or Windows.

/was that trailing apostrophe correct?

Some rumours about 2791 and 0228  seemed to indicate an association with high numbers of installed fonts, and deleting %system%\FNTCACHE.DAT (Windows will re-create it) resolved the issue. Only problem was, systems wouldn't boot, safe mode didn't work, and it needed a boot from an installation disc to make startup repair available.

I think it failed miserably because only Microsoft compared it to Android or iPad tablets.  Everyone else compared it to Windows 7.

I think there was so much confusion about what MS was doing when 8 came out. Had they release the Surface first and then W8 it might have been very different. As it was W8 on desktop PCs was (rightly IMHO) seen as a bad move and when the Surface then came out it was tarred with that image. Had they launched Surface as a standalone tablet it would have been compared to the iPad and Android tablets. They could then have launched W8 as an OS that would run both software and apps.

I'm guessing it ain't capturing video.

Seriously - the bios recognises the firewire card, ubuntu sees it and loads the drivers, but nothing can see the camera that's plugged in. A camera that's immediately recognised on a Windows machine.

/ 4 hours of troubleshooting and trying different drivers, capture software, etc, etc and it's back to the Windows box.
// Ubuntu Studio - yes, the media production suite.
