Am I missing a joke here?  This seems like just a very boring story about a minor traffic accident due to an unsafe vehicle that resulted in a minor injury.

It was Alaska, the last vestige of America's Wild West.  I'm surprised he had a trailer hitch at all.  Most folks would just have a couple of their kids ride in the bed of the pickup truck and hold on to the trailer as best they could.

This headline makes people wonder "why is this on fark" so they click it. Then they find out a bicyclist was injured and everyone goes "oh, a bicyclist thread"

New Zealand, that is near Germany, right?

2014-08-15 02:51:24 PM
The safety chains are only supposed to hold long enough for the truck to stop; should the trailer hitch fail or come loose. The biggest safety feature on a trailer is the tongue and locking mechanism. It sounds like this guy didn't have the right sized ball (there are three fairly popular ball sizes for small trailers). That's a pretty huge mistake. The tongue usually has the right size engraved right on it, and the balls themselves have their size on the top where you can't miss the size. Sounds like somebody shouldn't be driving trailers.

Bikes do not belong on the roads.  People belong on the roads.  Walking has been around longer, is safer for everyone involved, uses less resources....

safety chains?  Who has time for that?

I've seen large landscaping trailers being pulled in Alabama on major highways (say US 280 in Hoover) that didn't have the chains or the trailer lights connected.

So it sounds to me like the driver needs to sue the vehicle and trailer manufacturer.

Their show on NatGeo is about the only "reality" show that I would ever watch.  It fascinates me what those guys have to do just to try to do their jobs.  Oh, and the question about whether or not the guy with the trailer was "drunk"... if my perusal of their episodes is any indication... he was definitely drunk, because it seemed like a hell of a lot of people up there are.

I think the joke is in the comments where someone blames the bicycle because cars need the room to have accidents.

Give me about 4 hours and I will get right on pushing those stats up a bit...

One of our shooting buddies is a trooper.  You have probably seen him in 2 of those episodes.  Word came down that after this season the show is cancelled at the AST's request.  Apparently it was causing too many "distractions" with people vying to see who could make it on camera.

For anybody confused... the "ATV Trailer" isn't a trailer you use to transport ATVs. IT's a trailer used BY ATVs for things like carrying a few sacks of manure or supplies to a campsite.

img2u.info
It's not designed to take safety chains, and it isn't designed to run at highway or even road speeds, and when it cuts loose, those 4 wheels means it will keep going, instead of being slowed to a stop by a dropped hitch.

That driver was a dumbass indeed for even using it.

Even worse if it was one of these.  At least with 2 axles the thing had a chance of staying level.  The single axle style (ours, pictured below) would become a bouncing ball of destructo-fun the second that hitch dug into the road.

Try living in Gustavus AK, where the nearest medical facility is a helicopter ride to the clinic in Haines.

Hell, try living in a town where high school sports means plane flights or ferry rides.

Hey, you got to give it to the Alaskan ANG. They took the concept of mobile healthcare and made it fit into a C-130 with skis on the landing gear.

First of all, that would be a wagon not a trailer. Second , how can somebody be charged with not registering a trailer when it was already found to not be road worthy and therefor unregisterable?
