My dad grew up across the street from where Jean Harlow's grandpa had a real estate office and as a child, she was in there from time to time. But I don't think Madonna has done anything with Kevin Bacon.

And Madonna isn't worth the peanuts in the shiate of any of those individuals she name dropped.

I beg to differ.  Whether you like her or not, she is an icon.

To be fair, most of those farkers were dead before the song came out.

Why does this warrant a WEIRD icon?

She referenced old people in the song, and nearly 25 YEARS LATER the last one died.

I would bet some people born the day the song came out are now out of college, married, and on their third kid.

So is Charles Manson.

The question to ask is "Why is she an icon?" or "What does she represent?"

And if you judge by the "style and grace" that are mentioned in the song's lyrics, I don't think she measures up to the names she's dropping. She obviously wants to be considered in that league (otherwise, why mention them in that context), but IMHO she's not there.

But she's probably made more money than all of them combined, so she's got that going for her.

That's not really that weird.  Only 4 of them were alive when the song was released and those who were living were all pretty old at the time.  It's actually kind of amazing in the other direction.  That someone who was mentioned in that song managed to live 24 more years.

Actually, I'd think someone would have had the list from the song and been preparing for all of them to die... crossing them off as they passed.   Like a Madonna Dead Pool.

The song also mentions "you" a whole lot.

That settles it, Madonna's clairvoyant. She name-dropped the 2006 Time Person of the Year in 1990.

Yeah, you can probably all guess what I was thinking there.

I think he's up to fifteen versions of that farking song.

Is anyone going to point out that most of those people were dead by the time the video even came out in 1990?

Madonna's Bacon number is 2.
Madonna appeared with Sean Penn in Shanghai Surprise.
Sean Penn appeared with Kevin Bacon in Mystic River.

There are different versions? I thought so but wasn't sure. I just hear the same insipid chord progression and melody and my mind files it as background noise and filters accordingly.

Cybernetic: The question to ask is "Why is she an icon?" or "What does she represent?"

She's the best selling female recording artist of all time and is known around the world.  She's probably more famous than the people she mentions in the song.

When you achieve that level of success and fame, you automatically become an icon.

And LOL at "why does Madonna think she's relevant?"
Consistently ahead of her time.
Courage to innovate and take the criticism that it brings.
Courage to be comfortable with being a human, sexual creature unconcerned about other peoples judgement.
All while being the best selling female artist EVER.
...
..
.
Yeah, totally irrelevant.

She should have mentioned Abe - then her song would have been timeless.

Some of them were nearly 90 when the song came out. It's probably more impressive that they were still alive then.

I hope someone mentions Justin Beiber in a song so that he'll die sooner.
