Since April, thieves who posed as customers at the store handed stolen iPhones to employees in the ring and exchanged them for new iPhones, police said. A seventh person, Best Buy Mobile employee Sean Flynn, 25, of Davie, provided serial numbers from cellphones at Best Buy Mobile. Part of the scheme hinged on Apple employees using that information to assign cellphone serial numbers to the new iPhones at the Apple store, police said.

What?

What exactly was stolen? Some serial numbers?

So, find a stolen iPhone and then exchange it for a new iPhone? Why did they need rings and stolen serial numbers to do that?

Apparently cop math applies to more than just drugs

I have to use an iphone at work, and I would have guessed it was a $100 piece of hardware, not $833.

I actually did pay about $800 for a phone, but it makes myapple phone look like a consolation prize at a Luddite raffle. :)

They must be those secret decoder rings. The kind you got from a cereal box.

iPhones reported stolen are difficult to sell. So, they set up a ring of people to exchange those phones for brand new ones worth a lot more.

It was like money laundering but with phones instead.

The part I don't understand is why the guy swiping serial numbers from Best Buy didn't throw up red flags quickly.

Apple math.

64G 5s, $849 without a plan.  Looks like the "cop math" was actually conservative.

Hmm... I dunno, new in the box iPhones sell for a whole bunch of money in Brazil. etc.  $800-ish probably isn't too far off.

The really crazy thing about this story is how in the hell did his Mom afford $750 a month for his car, while paying her own bills, cleaning offices for a living?

Devon Persad, 26, of Tamarac, was identified as the ringleader who hosted big dinners to recruit fellow Apple store employees, bragging about the new 2014 Lexus he bought and the home loan he paid off, according to the arrest warrants.

But at Persad's bond hearing Wednesday, his mother said she was helping pay for her son's living expenses, on her house cleaner's income. She said she paid the $750 monthly cost of the lease and car insurance for the Lexus and that her son lived in a rented apartment with his girlfriend.

Either someone is a big liar, living in fantasy land, or he's somewhat smart, and using his mother to hide his assets.

Blah people, buying shiat they can't afford - and bragging about it - seems normal.
