I was a bit old for the early TV shows, and what little I saw struck me as incredibly stupid (even as a fan of anime and giant robot sci-fi).  If they dropped the cheeseball style and intentionally bad anime parody, they could probably create a decent action film on the concept.

Didn't the pink ranger get naked?  I wonder if she'll have a topless scene in the movie.

Unfortunately, it will likely fail in the same way the recent miserable Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film failed.

Shh, subby. If they get too inspired, they'll make an "edgy, dark remake that really explores the depth of the characters..."

Maybe they could bring back the Yellow Ranger!

Or the original Black Ranger with the cybernetic middle finger!

This headline implies the first movie was a failure. It made 4x the production cost and I remember enjoying it as a child. It was a power Rangers movie. It did exactly what it set out to do.

2014-08-14 04:29:08 PM
I remember watching the first one as part of a Thursday night screening triple feature (it opened the same day as Apollo 13 and Judge Dredd).  We saved it for last, because we knew it was going to be awful.  I think we fired it up around 5am, and it ended up making Judge Dredd a better movie by association.

2014-08-14 04:29:16 PM
I'll allow it, only if they bring back Bryan Cranston to do the voice work for Snizzard and Twin Man.

I was smack dab in the demographic and I thought they sucked.

And the tie-in video game was a fantastic if a little difficult beat-em-up. (difficult for an eight year old)

Make it serious and dark... give it a good budget for effects and make the Zords and the vilains cool as hell and you could have a winner.

Totally. After playing that game all night we finally found the best way to beat the game. 1st player would play solo. 2nd player would wait until right before 1st player died and then join. 1st player would wait until 2nd player was just about to die and join in. I know it defeated the point of playing it together, but we actually still played it together. Rooting each other on to get as far as they could before dying and then jumping in at the last second to make sure we didn't lose. I still remember barely beating one of the end stage bosses so close to death and it was exciting for both of us.

The TV Series started in 1993.  The movies were in 1995 and 1997.

Same here. This was the same time period as stuff like Batman The Animated Series and Gargoyles was being aired and even as a kid I could see the vast difference in quality.

Didn't an extra on the original run express interest in buying a yacht from some newly retired couple, only to muder them horribly and steal the boat?  They should incorporate that in the storyline...because edgy.

Oh god yes. When you're playing  Heart of Ice and a show where they flex and pose for half an hour around some old Godzilla reject costumes back to back don't be surprised when I lose interest in one of them.

Yep....Skylar DeLeon.  Horrible farking story.  Took the boat out on a sea test, tied the husband and wife up to the anchor and threw them overboard with it.

My friends and I went to go see the first one in the theater for no good reason at all. I knew it was still the early days of CGI and all, but damn! I saw better CGI in Playstation cutscenes!

I was also amused in the scene when the kid's dad comes home from work and gets out of his van. When he steps out you can see the inside of the van and it has no wheel or dashboard! Because they filmed the movie in Australia and were trying to pass it off as an american car.

Get Guillermo del Toro to spend an afternoon designing three or four monsters and the MegaZord. That's all it would take and you know he already has ideas.

She used to be in the canadian cop show Flashpoint. Even under the SWAT gear you coyld tell she still had a rockin body.

The reason behind that? It was the exact same footage used in the Japanese version. Hence the cheeseball style and bad anime parody.

Why film something twice when you can do it once for half the price and dub over the voice.

Here's the basic story outline for the movie:

Rangers gathered by big eraser-head guy.
Rita sends down a ridiculous-looking man-sized monster to attack the weird little town.
Rangers use their powers and martial arts skills to battle monster and nearly win.
Rita throws her staff at the ground and yells MAKE MY MONSTER GROWWWWWWW!
Man-sized monster grows into ridiculous-looking kaiju.
Power Rangers attack individually and nearly lose to kaiju.
Power Rangers join to make their own giant robot thingee and fight kaiju, then win.
Rita moans and the Rangers go have a malt at the malt shop.
Eraser-head guy says something fortune-cookie-like.
GUITAR MUSIC.

If that scares you, never watch Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger.  The Sentai show where all the MMPR action footage is from has some pretty dark plot turns.  Especially for Burai the dragonranger.

I know that.  But I'm saying if they dropped that style, they could create something more interesting.

The man is responsible for Star Trek Into Darkness, Transformers revenge of the fallen, and Amazing Spider-Man 1&2. He is a hack and a truther. His work sucks.
