They had good fries back before 1997, then they changed them to the horrible starch covered ones, then this new kind. Back in the day they looked and tasted like McDonald's fries. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Now my favorite fast food fries are Chick-Fil-A waffle fries. They even bring them right to your table.

It's because no one could bring themselves to say such a stupid name out loud.

2014-08-14 10:22:14 AM
They were certainly the saddest fries around.

2014-08-14 11:21:30 AM
They might have sold better if they weren't overpriced compared to the regular fries. My local BK charged the same for a small Satisfries as a large regular-style fry.

2014-08-14 11:21:31 AM
I liked them, but when you are charging more for them, sometimes, I will pick the easier, cheaper option.

Should have sold them as a crinkle cut and stressed the crinkle part.  I think crinkle fries are better.

Maybe it was only in Hawaii... but the KFC fries were amazing.  they weren't fries, they were chunks of potato seasoned just right.  They weren't soggy like the crap here at the KFCs in the main land US.  then again I haven't been to Hawaii for a long time so maybe their KFC fries are just as horrible as the ones here now.

2014-08-14 11:24:05 AM
I didn't care for the ones I had. Of course regular BK fries are crappy too. Especially after they went with those weird battered fries.

I think they just don't cook them fully anymore. I remember those as well, though I haven't had KFC in years.

2014-08-14 11:24:06 AM
They were okay at first.. as in the first few bites, but they had this weird aftertaste that made you not want to eat the rest of them.

Also, chicken fries are gross.. who the hell clamored for its return?

2014-08-14 11:25:39 AM
Burger King said the lower-calorie fries used a different type of batter....

GODDAMMIT, French fries should not have farking BATTER on them. Slice potatoes, fry, salt. Job done.

In the consumers defense, it's hard to grasp the concept of "healthy food choices in Burger King" without heads exploding.

2014-08-14 11:26:11 AM
Good.  I usually get a kids meal and my local BK started making satisfries the default option so I have to specifically ask not to have them.  I didn't hate the satisfries but I don't really like crinkle cut.

2014-08-14 11:26:21 AM
They were too soft. Fries need to be crisp on the outside, but those things were always soggy whenever one ended up in my regular fries.

"But Ted, our models showed that people want less calories, that should have been a winner!"

"Suck it James, you're fired."

2014-08-14 11:31:37 AM
Damn, I liked 'em. Not because they were lower calorie, they were just light, fluffy crinkle fries that weren't just strings of salty starch. (Not that I don't love me some strings of salty starch sometimes, but these were a nice alternative.)

I'm with peachy, should have marketed them differently.

yup.  seems pretty simple.

if they want a healthier option, maybe just serve fries (without batter).

/ i don't deep fry stuff at home, so i bake fries. they turn out pretty edible.  but, that would be unreasonable or impossible in a fast food setting.

This!  Wendy's fries are pretty good but for overall consistency (of taste and over time), Chick-Fil-A's waffle fries are the best fast food fries to me as well.

Supposedly my boss liked the "satis-fries" but never tried them myself.  I agree that crinkle fries CAN be really good (crispy) or really bad (soggy).

The Satisfries were just Ore-Ida Golden Crinkles with a different name. The current CEO of Heinz (parent of Ore-Ida) was a former BK guy, and BK and Heinz share some common ownership. Gotta keep those investors happy.

2014-08-14 11:38:25 AM
The BK near my office sold satisfries in at least every second meal. It was clearly a winner for the location. They have dropped the item, sadly. It's a shame. Satisfries ranked up there with red robin fries, mainly because there's actually potatoe in them and not just potatoe shavings lightly salted.

2014-08-14 11:39:53 AM
My wife and I both had sads this weekend. We loved the crinkle cut fries. We don't like their regular fries. The only reason we eat there is sometimes it is BK or dried out hot dogs at a truck stop. My wife does like the zesty sauce but not all BKs seem to stock it.

They now officially suck in my book.

2014-08-14 11:39:57 AM
Well, damn, I thought there would be a fry at Burger King I actually enjoyed.

Maybe they'll realize their regular fries are awful and go back to the thinner fries.  I like BK Burgers better than McDs, but the fries are a deal breaker.

/This post sounds fat.

Meh. I make my own.
I cut steak fry sized fries from big long Idahoes.
then I put them in a collapsible fry basket and dunk them in boiling water in a turkey fryer.
This keeps the water boiling longer as I make them.
Once they are blanched, they are removed and dunked in ice water to chill them.
Then they go on a flat tray to be frozen IQF, if I'm not going to fry them today. (Ziplock when stiff)
I put them in the same basket and then dunk them in the turkey fryer with peanut oil and a rocket stove under it on full blast. Take them out and shake the basket over a pile of news papers in a box and tos salt on them while doing this.

Serve with Heinz 57.

Huh. They just looked like crinkle fries to me. Took forever for them to cool down enough to eat though.

I like the Chick-Fil-A too

If McD and BK and Wendy's would put some FAT back in the deep-FAT fryers, and stop using those weird processed potatoes strips, then we'd be getting somewhere.

I'm not holding my breath.

I found Chik-Fil-A's waffle fries to be disgusting the time I got to try them. They just tasted like grease. I'm probably spoiled by a local roadhouse that does them much better.

BKs crinkle fries were much better than their normal tasteless fries. Too expensive and stupidly named, though.

My favorite fast food fries are from In-N-Out. They're awesome. And they cut the potatoes fresh. The one near where I used to live had a window in the drive through lane where you can watch the employees pushing potatoes through the grating/cutting machine thing.

it's funny that fat is everybody's fear.  fat is not really an issue.  a potato is going to help you gain weight no matter how it's cooked.  it's just starch, turns to sugar in your belly.  doesn't really have much nutritional value.  the fat is probably good for you, because it will make you feel full faster, meaning you eat less potato.

/ i love potatoes, but i don't want to lose weight.  if i wanted to, i would take potatoes and bread out of my diet (wouldn't go 100% non-carb, but I would select better carbs)
// i would not really worry about fat.  however, this is because I don't have a high fat diet.  i just don't think about it.

McDonald's had AWESOME fries - until PETA complained about the beef tallow being used and Mickey D's removed it from the equation.  Now they taste like salted gluesticks.

Step 1: Make some nice fries

Step 2: Ruin them with ketchup

I liked them too. The crinkly fries were like thicker version of the fries at Church's Chicken. I never appreciated that they cost extra though.

2014-08-14 12:17:14 PM
Why not throw the fries in a centrifuge when they're done, to spin the extra oil out of them?  Or cook them by zapping them with lasers, yeah, that's it.  Whatever marketing gimmick you think would sell them...

I've had BKs Satisfries a couple of times, and to me they tasted the same as the crinkle cut ones I buy frozen at the supermarket.

NTTAWWT, I love both crinkle cut & steak fries.. Never really much cared for the "shoestring" style fries.

Usually just make my own though, using one of these:

Amen. I miss the old recipe. Though the Satisfries were pretty good, as other people have stated, they were more or less generic crinkle-cut fries. However, given the choice, I will go with curly fries from Hardees (Carl's Junior for the West coasters), greasy as hell, but fairly tasty and good with a roast beef and BBQ sauce.

Meh.  One should not be looking for 'healthy' options at a BK anyway.  I had an opportunity to try the satisfries.  To me, they looked and tasted like frozen fries I sometimes get at my Kroger, but not cooked long enough, they were soggy soggy soggy.  BK's other fries suck too.  I only like Wendy's fries if I can dip 'em in my chocolate frosty. (OH YOU KNOW YOU DO IT TOO)

Steak n Shake has the most awesome fries for my tastes.

I do not care for any of the food at Burger King but I have ate there now and then. I tried the new fires and thought they were awful with a bad after taste. We have Whataburger here and their fries are really good. The fires I enjoy the best but cant seem to find anywhere without the skins on part of them are thick cut steak fries like this www.lutosa.com

I was kind of digging the fact they had crinkle cut fries. These are getting to be hard to find when eating out. Oh well back to going to BK grabbing a burger and then treking across town for my Fires at Mickey D's (No better options in my one horse town)
