destrip: Funny how nearly all electrical failures (especially overhead wires arcing together in storms) are classed by non-electrical people as "transformer explosions." In reality, transformers rarely explode. Such an event would likely release large amounts of oil, cause a large fire, and be a local environmental disaster. Small transformers (like on utility poles) are normally fuse-protected and in the majority of failure situations the fuse blows before the thing actually explodes. Large transformers have extensive protection schemes designed to interrupt power to them at the first sign of a catastrophic failure - everything from differential protection (comparing power going in to power going out - if there is a discrepancy, it must be going somewhere it's not supposed to) to sudden pressure (if there were a worst-case scenario - an arc inside the sealed transformer tank) the sudden rise in pressure would trigger a sensor which in turn would trip all breakers supplying the transformer.)
