Relax, Frankie; the court also refused to stay their ruling striking down the three-day waiting period for buying turtles. There's plenty of time for you to find one that will let you into its shell.

I wouldn't be surprised. Sotomayor stayed the decision in the 10th Circuit, and this one is Roberts' to stay.

Staying the legalization of gay marriage: because the harm to bigots having to know it's happening would be far greater than the harm to couples prohibited from marrying each other.

Eh, just don't speed more than you do anywhere else.  5-7 over, you'll be fine.  10 and above, you might want to slow it down a bit.

Not really seeing a connection or a point for that matter. Am I missing something?  Speeding can put others lives at risk, radar detectors make speeding easier.  Gay marriage puts no one at risk.  But yea, don't speed in Virginia... or any where for that matter.

If gays are allowed to get married there, more real 'murican patriots will be speeding to get away from the state before Obama can take their guns, or some other argument that defies logic.

Out of curiosity, the article says 1 court in the last 14 months actually upheld a ban. Doesn't anyone know what court that was? I don't remember seeing anything but bans losing.

It was some rural county in Tennessee.  Trial court level, not even appellate.  It'll get overturned before long.

Here you go.

Granted, this decision is going to go down in history as one of the most ignorant rulings in the entire gay marriage fight. Of course, if this ruling causes the SC to finally make a definitive ruling on gay marriage, then I will applaud this judge for helping to usher in gay marriage.

No, better off waiting a year or so to get all the appelate courts to agree rather thaan going to the Supreme Court. There is a real risk that the Supreme Court will rule against gay marriage and then it will be at least a generation before it gets overturned.

Thanks guys. I was traveling then and that's why I must have missed it. Appears from the link that he uses the Focus on the Family dream argument of "we need babies for the state." It'll be interesting to see what TN's appeals court does. What states are also covered in that region.

It'll get overturned when it hits the Tennessee supreme court. Judges at the local level in Tennessee are elected, not appointed, and the area where this court ruling took place is a local court in a notoriously traditional and religious conservative area of the State. (The people who keep electing douchebags like Campfield)

People are getting tired of their shenanigans. There was a state-wide recall effort by the Tennessee Tea Party this year for the three SCOT judges who were up for renewal that backfired spectacularly when it was pointed out how every one of their objections basically amounted to "They won't rule the way I like" and utter lies.

20 and above over and it's a misdemeanor. Those can get expensive, even if you have an otherwise clean driving record. Particularly if you get popped for it in Fairfax County (they do tons of business in them there). So never, ever, ever go over 15 mph above in VA.

Right.  Because speed limits were created for safety and not for revenue.

Tennessee's circuit court of appeals district already held a mass hearing for several cases throughout the area, can't remember how long ago it was, maybe a couple weeks?  Not too long, might be a while before a decision.

True, but it's better to make it not even worth the cop's time to pull you.  Some states actually prohibit ticketing until you're 10 miles over because of radar inaccuracies.  Not every state does this, but even if they don't , the penalty for such a small violation is so low cops typically won't waste their time.

gingerjet: Right.  Because speed limits were created for safety and not for revenue.

Often, yes, but it also depends on what you mean by "safety."  All other factors being equal, higher speeds don't massively increase the likelihood of a wreck, but they drastically increase the likelihood of serious injury/death in a wreck.  Think hazard, not risk.  Five bucks says states/municipalities mostly don't want to be sued when there's a wreck because the high speed limit led to a death, and keep the speed limit lower than necessary so nobody can claim the state was negligent.  Might seem like a silly suit, but why take the risk if you can head it off?  A CYA may still be about money, but in a different sense than most people mean.
