I like how the organizers decided to use their real names. That's not going to get them in any trouble later on.

Yeah, it's only okay to defraud the public out of a lot of money if you're a banker or politician.

I'm not saying that it's okay to defraud people. I'm just saying that these guys are horribly inept at it.

What exactly would they hope to see at a Minecraft convention? People dressed as them explodey things?  An interview with some guy who plays Minecraft? Millions of blocks? Hmm, actually lots of blocks would be fun, but not $150 worth of fun.

I liked the game but I can't imagine what could possibly entice people to this event.

If you can organize a successful Bronycon, a Minecraft convention doesn't seem too farfetched.

God, do they even charge close to that for the actual Minecon that Notch or other gaming "celebrities" might show up at?

There are some very fetching young women doing let's play series on youtube with Minecraft, though I have to be honest most don't hold my attention past a few episodes.

Actually most LP series kinda suck.

but the people who paid through PayPal have no chance to recover their money because tickets were purchased so long ago.

This is why I always use a credit card with PayPal.  PayPal does not provide any real protection to buyers.

THIS IS NOT A SCAM. That's important to note. Just paypal any amount of money to the address in my profile, and you will receive blessings, luck, good fortune, happiness, joy, and possibly herpes (but probably not, unless you don't send enough money). THIS IS NOT A SCAM.

I've seen several amateur cons get in over their head. You'd think someone starting a new convention would go find someone from the management team of a similar convention and pay them to help out,  and show them the ropes, sort of a budding system, if you will.

I've heard a pretty reasonable argument that Dashcon actually worked really well, for two reasons.  First, it was perfect for the kind of people who would attend a Tumblr convention, because it gave them something to complain about on Tumblr.  Second, the attendance next year will be MASSIVE, just because everyone wants to see what a colossal disaster it is.  When people heard about the Dashcon nightmare, how many do you think responded with some version of "damn, wish I could have seen that, it sounds hilarious"?  Next year they'll get their chance.

PLEASE NOTE WE ARE NOT A SCAM

Every darknet market failure apology letter, ever.

Ok except for that one guy who just admitted he couldn't make a market work and had decided to cut and run, and use the money to pay off his dealers so he could "survive a few more months" without getting killed.

Well, the official con lets you hear the developers talk about how they're totally going to make that mod API, probably around the same time Half Life 3 comes out. Also you get a cape. At least they updated the engine to stop rendering every exposed block in every loaded chunk.

This is the downside of niche SF fandom going mainstream:  time was that if you signed up for a fly-by-night
convention you were out maybe $30.

It is bonkers that they would walk away with the money. A successful convention is a yearly license to print money with little work.

It usually takes 3 years for any convention to establish any traction, and even then they are generally lucky
to be able to become self-sustaining from year-to-year, which is why many cons are actually non-profit
entities.

Selling a half million dollars worth of pre-sale tickets sounds like they are doing ok. Or they should be at least.
