That is the idea, yes.

how so?  they have a point guard that's always injured and can't seem to make the playoffs.  and power forward who looks out only for his stats, jacks up too many threes, and hasn't won anything since high school.  a me-first shooting guard that might not be that good.  a center that misses 50 games per season on average and might be 40 years old.

but they do have lebron, so it's 50/50 really.

Well, that was a pretty stupid article.

"In order to have a chance to win, the Cavaliers are going to have to have some of their lesser-talented players take a step back and quit acting like they're so good."

BFD.

Also, I do like the whole "take the previous year's champion, then presume that's the only way to win" mentality. Yes, the Spurs are great. If they lose Kawhi Leonard, they don't win a title. Same goes, probably, for Tony Parker. If they don't shoot 60% from three, maybe some games are actually close (that's a crazy percentage even for open shots, and not all of 'em were open).

Same goes for people thinking you have to be like Miami after 2013 when the Spurs were a lucky bounce away from winning the title. There are several ways to win a championship.

Are they a perfect team? No, but they are about as good a team as could be assembled from the pieces available.

JusticeandIndependence: violentsalvation: Win the whole thing?

I would like to win the whole NBA as well. It would look great on my mantle. People would come over and ask 'Ooh, is that the NBA on your mantle?' And I would say 'Why, yes, care to have a look?' And right there on the mantle would be the whole NBA. Mario Chalmers will look so adorable begging to be set free, but no, Mario, you know you go well with the lamp.

I may have to rearrange a knickknack or two to make sure it all fits.

i actually haven't, but i'll look it up.  though i think i listen to his cleveland podcast with what's his face, lebron's personal reporter dude.  and i really do think lack of healthy (and good) bigs could be an issue.  that said, i'm pretty sure lebron will still be a good addition to the cavs.  i'm going out on a limb there...

A quick glance around my office here in Cleveland reveals that only 1 of our group of 15 was even born the last time there was a pro championship in this town (sorry Cleveland Crunch).  She was 2 weeks old the day the Browns beat Baltimore in 1964.  Please just let us enjoy the moment, it just may happen this time.

They'll never win because we all know LeBron isn't a winner. He lacks the heart of a champion. He doesn't have the moxie or the grit and determination necessary to win the big one. Ask Dan Gilbert, he'll tell you.

/actually they won't win because even if their starting 5 is going to be all star, their bench is going to be the corpses of Allen, Miller, and probably Marion and...uh...those other guys Cleveland's got, probably all #1 picks

Well, the Cleveland Gladiators will be hosting the ArenaBowl on the 23rd, which would be a pro championship.

/hey, the Crunch were technically a pro team, too

Time, but is there money? Or, are there enough ring chasing vets willing to take the minimum that can actually be useful?

And they need more than front court depth, the backcourt looks pretty thin, too, unless Waiters and Irving are going to play 47 minutes a game.

I see their season playing out like Miami's last year, top dog in the East, easily handled by pick one of about 5 better deeper teams in the West. They've got a great core but they need role and bench guys, and they're in the middle of trading them away for another star.

With shrewd management and drafting they could build a dominant, perhaps even dynastic team around that core. Since it's Cleveland, I foresee 4 years of playoff frustration before LeBron tries to find another place he can actually win with competent management, then more jersey burnings, and finally another comic sans butthurt put to paper.

2014-08-13 04:11:30 PM
I see no plus perimeter defenders on their roster other than LeBron.  Shawn Marion addresses the problem, if slightly.

I'd bank on them likely facing OKC or SAS in the Finals.  The Eastern Conference should only provide a challenge in the form of Chicago, but they can beat them.

OKC has two spectacular scorers, plus two other solid scoring role players in Ibaka and Jackson.

SAS obliterated a very good trapping defense in Miami.

Cleveland will have to score to keep up with those two teams and I don't think they can do it.  Especially with a lack of playoff experience for most of its players.  But I don't think they're out to win this year.  It will take a couple or few.  San Antonio will last for one or at max two years, and OKC's longterm could be fragile.

Gilbert turned out to be prophetic with that, though... He was right... LeBron was trying to take the easy way to a ring, and guess what? He learned in the Dallas series, that you still have to go thru the fire, even if you have a great team.    LeBron had to experience that, first-hand.    In Cleveland, he figured everything was too hard.... In Miami, he learned that if you want a ring, it will be hard, no matter what.

I'm grateful for who he evolved and became, in Miami.   THAT was his education.  Now, he's bringing that mentality back to the Cavs.

THIS!

LeBron sucks so bad he couldn't win one college game, not one

BIG THREE

Irving > Wade         (Irving has movable knees and ankles)
Love  > Bosh         (Bosh is 6'11 and just shoot 3s and  20 footers. Get under the basket big dude)
LeBron > LeBron   (Last years LeBron is a year older and slower)

Cavs win the east but get blow out in the finals

Damn straight, i'm a Cleveland fan.   Tell you what.  Go read Gilbert's letter right now.  There is simply isn't anything debatable in it, other than the boast that Cleveland would win a ring before Miami, which was just bravado to pump up the fans....  Everything he said personally about LeBron was accurate.   If you disagree, come back here, and paste some quotes from the letter that were not true at that time.

Tell you what... i'll do it:

Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.  - TRUE

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.  - TRUE

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us. - TRUE

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.  - TRUE

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.  - NOT REALLY TRUE

You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal. - TRUE

You have given so much and deserve so much more.  - TRUE

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER 'KING' WINS ONE"  - FALSE

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.   -TRUE

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there. - TRUE

Sorry, but that's simply not how it works. - TRUE

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become.  - TRUE

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio. - TRUE

The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.  - FALSE

Just watch.

Sleep well, Cleveland.

I didn't 'like' the fact that he wrote it... I'm just correcting the perception that Gilbert penned a bunch of slanderous lies about LeBron....   I didn't like the fact that 2 people burned a jersey on youtube, either, but then again, at least it conveyed a strong emotion.

Let's just address this one.

1) Presupposes that the only way to be faithful is to never go anywhere else. Let's point out that Cleveland fans who have ever moved away from Cleveland are also extremely disloyal as well.
2) Home grown presupposes that Cleveland or the Cavaliers or Gilbert himself "grew" LeBron, who grew up in Akron, a place that, except for LeBron at this point, Cleveland regularly sh*ts on as inferior to them the way the rest of the country mocks Cleveland.
3) What's the lesson that you want your kids to learn that "sometimes it's up to you to achieve your dreams" is the opposite of? That you must wait for a billionaire to decide when you can achieve your goals?
4) You don't want them to grow up to be great family people who achieve at the highest level? Well, that DOES explain Cleveland.

Gunny Highway: The Cavs were extra motivated to bring a title to Cleveland after LeBron left? How so? What moves did they make to show this extra motivation?

Obviously they won the lottery twice. That's pretty good motivation.

If it was a long con by LeBron and Gilbert (since the Cavs were consistently having too good a record with LeBron to significantly improve their team, him leaving, getting them a sh*tton of picks, then coming back after getting a couple of titles and learning to win with a team capable of it, then applying those lessons to the new talented players that Cleveland was able to come up with), that's a hell of a job on both sides.

Also, this isn't the WWE.  Lebron didn't lose to Dallas because he had to learn about perseverance before he could win.  He lost to Dallas because Dirk had one of the best series in the history of anything.  It's not about narratives and storylines and heart.  It's about scoring more points than your opponent, and Dirk had an amazing series.

IAmRight: Gunny Highway: The Cavs were extra motivated to bring a title to Cleveland after LeBron left?

DafuQ?
The Cavs traded all there picks (Wiggins, Bennett) for Kevin Love. What new talented players players are you talking about?

They did get Irving and having had those picks enabled them to get a legitimate player, since it's not like superstars are clamoring to come to Cleveland. They at least got a chance to get Love in there and hope he actually enjoys it.

T.rex: Tell you what... i'll do it:

Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

- TRUE

But the good news is that this heartless and ...

I haven't seen anyone squandered as much goodwill than Dan Gilbert and his immature hissy fit sine GWB after 9/11. This idiot is lucky he won the lottery twice and Lebron for being the bigger man.
