At one point, the assailant held his hand over Barnes' mouth and when Barnes bit him, he removed her dentures and threw them out of the car window

I really shouldn't be laughing at that.

When I was in my late teens I tried to help out several homeless peoples in Austin. I'd visit them every day and help them get food, water, rides to places they could stay, all kinds of stuff. None of them ever recognized me the next day and seemed oblivious that we'd known each other for several months. One day I'll try to help the homeless again. But for now, I don't really have time to give a shiat.

Wow. I hope that you never have to live with anyone that has Alzheimer's disease.  Do you do it for the recognition or do you do it because you want to help?

FTFA: Apparently homeless himself, the attacker told Barnes, "You rich (expletive) think we need your help."

Okay, you heard the smelly, crazy man. Let's pack up this welfare state and go home. It was a nice try but they're having none of it.

Very Old News. When I was a kid, our church (and several others) ran soup kitchens for the poor across the river in Washington, DC.

Until April 5, 1968. Then, the survivors were pulled out.

Is it that unreasonable to get dispirited when, after a few months of contact, people don't even recognise the person helping them?

My 16 year old daughter gets up early on Saturday mornings and goes to a Catholic run program that tutors/mentors inner city children.  She goes there after school when school is in session, too.  She gets berated through the fence when they are out on the playground by adults in the neighborhood (which was ranked worst in the nation...twice).

She'll still go again this weekend.

To the point where you no longer want to help them because they don't recognize you?

Was it by the cops? Because some cities are pretty strict when it comes to you having the nerve to feed another human being.
