Police said the product is a mixture of herbs and spices that's sprayed with a synthetic compound similar to THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

Similar, as in the substance looks like marijuana. The effects are nothing like THC. But then again, it's cop drug knowledge.

Depends on which chemicals it has, from what I've heard.  Some are similar, others are drastically and even dangerously different.  It's a crap shoot.  Random grass clippings sprayed with ???? from China.  Yeah, I'll pass.

If you smoke potpourri sprayed with a chemical substance that may or may not be a synthetic version of THC to catch a buzz and you die, that's just Mother Nature culling the herd.

Seeing as it's China, I'm going to assume it's melamine.

\The only Chinese product which is melamine free is melamine.
\\The melamine contains lead.
\\\Ironically, the lead contains cobalt
\\\\The cobalt is lie. It's actually painted melamine.

Then again, why not just stick with real weed? Cheaper, none of the siezures, heart pops, and debilitating strokes, and it doesn't exactly take a lot of imagination to find some decent herb, especially if you're in the city.

I guess people are worried about drug tests maybe?  I'm actually a bit concerned that people could start lacing ditch weed with this synthetic crap and marketing it as good stuff.  I haven't seen ANY reports of that happening, but if I could think of it I'm sure some unscrupulous drug dealer could.  Real weed is about the safest way to substantially alter your consciousness out there.

When I just got out of the Army I smoked a bit of the K2 and Mr Nice Guy stuff.  It has slightly similar effects to cannabis, but only slightly similar.  It didn't seem to last very long and it tended to make me feel anxious.

The main problem now is that every time they outlaw a Spice/K2 variant, the manufacturers tweak to the formula and make a new product with an extra molecule in it.  I'd imagine that by now, all of the smokable incense products are chemical Frankensteins.

If the prohibitionists really cared about users, they would legalize cannabis, a very safe substance, and go after the synthetic market as though they were meth labs.

So some people have overdosed on the stuff.
Sounds more like a dosage problem then anything else.

I'll bet more people die and are sent to the hospital drinking too much Redbull, then this stuff.

The last time I smoked this stuff things got weird. I passed out, and when I woke up, some crusty desert hobos were worshipping me and made a bible out of my insane ramblings.

Then I went blind and threw a knife a some dude's head using baby vision.

Like I said, weird.

it'd be too expensive (Spice tends to sell for almost 3 times the price of regular weed last I checked). A dealer like that would be more likely to cut it with dried parsley or oregano from the dollar store than spend that kind of money cutting it with something more expensive. Crack and heroin dealers are known to cut their shiat with pretty much whatever's lying around on the cheap, for example.

Abe Vigoda's Ghost: So some people have overdosed on the stuff.

Dosage and complete lack of information as to exactly what chemicals are in it.  The process goes like this:

1.  Some guy buys potentially unknown chemicals from an overseas supplier, the legal status of which is questionable at best
2.  Mixes whatever amount of whatever he has in with some random dried herbs
3.  Labels it as "Potpourri - NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION" with absolutely no further information
4.  Profit

If they're stupid enough to smoke it, leave them be.  If they die....*shrug*....oh well it was their choice.

No - similar, as in the chemical is a cannabinoid that is related to THC. It binds to the same chemical receptors in the brain, but it has other effects due to the differences in the rest of the molecule.

There are lots and lots of THC-related chemicals out there, and most of them have effects that are "nothing like THC," but that wasn't the original claim. You should also remember that having effects "just like THC" (but 100 times more powerful and much longer-lasting) can also be a problem.

But then again, it's drug dealer knowledge ("it's sorta like THC but they can't arrest me for selling it, so it must be okay").

The thing for me about this stuff is: Made in China.  Those people don't give a damn. Dog food that kills your dog? No problem. Milk that kills babies? They sold that too, till they finally got caught and executed.  Most recently, rotting meat for McDonalds? No problemo. Ship it, Danno.

Now,  here you have a product that is clearly labeled  Not For Human Consumption  (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)making the producer and the shop who sells the stuff lawsuit-proof.  One day the manufacturer is just a little short of one chemicals to finish the batch needed for shipment the next day. Is the manufacturer going to, A - tell the buyer he  couldn't finish the run. B- Rummage around the shed for any old stuff that is around. C- Double-check the labeling to make sure that's labeled Not For Human Consumption, and dump that drum of industrial cleaner in the mix.

But hey, it's your choice. Do you feel lucky today?

Booze is either by weight like 3.2 beer or proof, like 152 proof Everclear.

The biggest hurdle pot has with the government is now what is the strength. The medical marijuana people are trying to come up with a solution that tells the strength (and probably the price).
Until the metrics are solved, cannabis is the Frankstein, too.

get real weed! it's easy to find, and can be very inexpensive, depending on your region, the quality, the quantity, etc, and not a single death has been directly attributed to it ever.

This is THC:
upload.wikimedia.org

This is HU-210, a synthetic cannabinoid that was found in "Spice" a few years ago:
upload.wikimedia.org
This is CP 47,497, also found in a lot of "Spice":
upload.wikimedia.org

They are very close analogues of THC and have rather similar effects. HU-210 & CP 47,497  are now ontrolled substances in many countries.

JWH-018 is one of the most famous synthetic cannabinoids, featuring a modification of the core structure:
upload.wikimedia.org
and it's closely related to JWH-073:
upload.wikimedia.org
These compounds are commonly associated with these "herbal incense" fake marijuana products. And they're banned all over the place now.

All of the compounds are potent CB1/CB2 agonists, In contolled studies, they have very similar effects to THC. Many of the reported subjective differences attributed to the synthetics may be due more to dosing and pharmacokinetic differences (i.e., a single cannabis "bud" is a somewhat controlled dose, but nobody really knows how much of this other stuff gets sprayed on your dried oregano; these compounds are typically absorped better and metabolized differently by the body, dramatically affecting peak blood levels and drug half-lives)--it's not clear how much of the qualitative effects are simply due to these potency differences.

They're not the same as THC; but they were specifically designed to be similar to THC, but with alterations to their pharmcological properties.

But then again, this is just pharmacologit knowledge.
