Saw one of those Mighty Ships episodes about fibre-optic cable-laying ship hooking up Central and South America. Pretty damn impressive technology.

It's a long read but if you're interested in the process of laying ocean cables, Wired had a great article by Neal Stephenson  back in 1996 about it. Think Wired peaked with that issue and has been falling ever since.
