I clicked through the Jezebel re-post to the NBC Philly link.  Surprisingly, Jez seems to have reflected the original story well.  White-knighting or not, what a bunch of textbook-definition scrubs to be whoopin' and hollerin' at passing women from your buddy's car?

2014-08-13 09:42:21 AM
Street harassers turning violent is why most women travel around with some kind of weapon after dark.

2014-08-13 09:59:59 AM
But it's just compliments! Women shouldn't have a problem with it! How else are men supposed to hit on women?

Poor guy. Hopefully they catch the bastards.

2014-08-13 10:12:22 AM
Jeez, the headline made it sound like he got shot or stabbed or something. Nope, just said the wrong thing to the wrong guy and got KO'd for his trouble.

This just in: attitudes in the Big City may not be the same as in your hometown. Sticking your nose in someone else's business may not elicit the "aw shucks, mister, we're AWFUL sorry" you're expecting.

Hey babe, look at me, I can knock out a random middle-aged dude! Wanna come back to my place?

The women then found themselves attracted to the dominant group of men.

I always do.
And I'm a guy.

The comments were particularly insightful ...

So... was he defending the men or the women? Headline is ambiguous.

Good to know that there are men who are so irrationally fixated on their need to publicly demean and shame women they are willing to beat the shiat out of anyone who gets in their way or dares call it into question. hawk their dick like an aggressive panhandler to women they don't know.

2014-08-13 10:16:49 AM
I always just put up with/ignored it.  Men are always going to do that and if they want to use some derogatory language, then fark them.  Fark those ignorant a-holes.

I can't believe this guy actually said something to them.  Actually he should have been able to but I wouldn't advise it.

Great. Add another layer of fear to all the reasons why I hate catcalling. will do the right thing and stand up for anyone being harrassed.

You gotta look at the positives.

Bullshiat. Harrassing a group of women isn't some sort of private "business".

2014-08-13 10:18:58 AM
What are the odds that any of these women will attempt to track him down and personally thank him?

Hey did you know concussions are actually a serious injury? Or that getting punched out is potentially fatal if you have an aneurism or it causes a subdural hematoma?

Patients who suffer a head injury with loss of consciousness are at increased risk of developing Parkinson disease years later, according to a study of twins presented at the AAN Annual Meeting here in April.

Props to the guy for standing up for them.

One hit KO though? What the hell damn guy? If you're going to white knight, be armored or at least able to back it up.

I'd love to do away with the phrase "white-knighting." It's used against men who stand up for women in just about any capacity. My brother was listening to a bunch of his friends being obnoxious a few weeks back, and when one of them went too far and made a rape joke, he shook his head and said, "That's really not cool, bro" and left the room. When he got back from the bathroom, the group had decided in his absence that he was "white-knighting." They did the whole, "she's not here man, she's not gonna sleep with you" thing. I'd kind of love to see men able to stick up for women without getting that kind of pushback from dude society, you know?

2014-08-13 10:22:31 AM
But I was told that women who are nervous about telling off guys who do this shiat are just being prissy and over-worrying! And that it's not REALLY a problem, and just over-hyped by feminists who just hate men.

And such.

I'm sure certain fark posters will be popping in to defend the attackers shortly, or at least go "GUY GOT WHAT HE DESERVED", though.

2014-08-13 10:22:31 AM
Moral of the story -

Don't call out catcallers for catcalling. Catcallers are assholes, and assholes don't like to be confronted, and they may fight you.

Men are scared of men too, ya know, women?

And for good reason - we're more likely to be beaten up and assaulted by a stranger than you are.

(Now, if you are in a pack of dudes who will fight with you, and have the numbers/strength on your side, maybe then call 'em out).

Let's cite a legitimate news source:
http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Man-Punched-Knocked-Uncons ci ous-During-Rittenhouse-Square-Attack-270588441.html

""The male victim took offense to something that the guys were saying to the girls and said 'hey, watch what you're saying,'" said Philadelphia Police Captain George Fuchs."

This. I've been reliably informed by the Fark MRA brigade that cat-callers are merely trying to compliment women and that there's no reason a women should be anything but grateful for the attention. She certainly shouldn't be concerned that the cat-callers might turn violent.

Kudos to the guy, but once again the Jezebel comments turn into a cesspool of hatred and angst.

Usually in places where where Hondas full of men under 25 cruise aimlessly up and down the strip for hours on end.

Surprise surprise, Jezebel's commentary sticks to the men are terrible narrative without acknowledging this guy's efforts to stop the harassment. That's all business-only--"defending a group of women ... according to police" is what they have to say about that particular man. Not so much as an 'at least there's one good guy out there.'

Maybe they resent his sexist chivalry since he was acting as though a woman needed a man's help.

2014-08-13 10:27:52 AM
Not really sure what the guy was expecting to get out of "defending" the woman. Cat-callers are morons for sure, but unless they're becoming a physical threat I see no upside in verbally reprimanding them. Did he really think he was going to make them become introspective about their disrespect of the woman?

2014-08-13 10:28:07 AM
and then the woman banged the catcaller cause she was in a "badboy" phase.

I'm starting to get the feeling that the He-Man Woman Haters who constantly make cracks about Jezebel have never actually read a Jezebel article. I do, once in a blue moon, and it just seems like kind of a snarky Lady's Home Journal.

To be fair, anyone hit in the right way will get knocked out. A guy I dated years ago was banned from most bars in Halifax due to his habit of knocking out bouncers. He was an ex-boxer.

Yes, men are the real victim here.

2014-08-13 10:30:39 AM
Assailant should be charged and the victim was morally justified...however...

It's generally a bad idea to scold assholes on the street at 3am Saturday morning.

No, it's much much worse.  I'm far more comfortable speaking my mind on the streets of the big city than the small town I grew up in.  At least in the city they're exposed to different attitudes.  In the small town, different attitudes are automatically suspect and if the locals won't beat you the cops will.

Hey Tex, you're not in Amarillo anymore.

2014-08-13 10:31:19 AM
Philly is hands down the most ghetto city I've been to (out of NYC, DC, Detroit, numerous mid-sized cities).

Every time I use public transit I'm exposed to ridiculous behavior I almost never see anywhere else.

One time I was at a McDonalds at 6:45am (still dark) drinking a cup of coffee by the window. The floor of the McDonalds was elevated about 1/3 of a floor level from the street. I notice someone standing next to me outside the window and look over to see this homeless bum using the wifi to watch porn on a smart phone facing me (white girl suck black guy c**k, relevant because I'm white and bum is black). There was any number of other places he could have been doing that where I wouldn't have to see that, pretty sure he picked that spot to show it to me. When I left this motherfarker followed me and started hitting on me. I asked him flatly if he was the guy at McDonald's watching porn and he says flatly and without a hint of surprise, "No" and proceeds to tell me I need to be more chill and other BS. I wish I had a can of mace. The same morning some dumbass stepped out in from of a huge Mac tuck crossing the intersection forcing it to slam on it's breaks and honk then he did this merry little jig in front of it like it was some big joke.

Thank goodness you are here to tell everyone what women experience.

Before we all get carried away here with our outrage I think it's important that we know whether or not the women being catcalled were dressed like whores.
