TFA fails to mention that he has been suspended from the team since then.  Still, a shameful episode.  I hope he faces real consequences.

Seems like a stretch to me also. They made a mistake when judging his character but there is no evidence in the article that he had a history of behaving this way and the university ignored it.

I'm sure he'll be punished severely by the team.
He'll miss at least a whole half of the first game against Middle Tennessee School of Typewriter Maintenance.

Csont'e?

The hospital assistant that typed up his birth certificate obviously didn't have her fingers on the home keys.Unfortunate mistake for the young man, but it can be fixed to whatever his parents really wanted to name him.

There's no "the" in front of the university name and the coach doesn't have a name that sounds like a particularly low-grade school lunch meat, so his suspension will stick for some time, if not made permanent by a felony conviction.

"A group of people were arguing about football and hockey. Everyone was talking ... crap. ... (The victim) was jaw-jacking. All (of a) sudden, the guy just came up and cold clocked (the victim)."

In his defense, have you met these hockey people?  They have this idea that getting drunk and watching hockey transfers to them magical badass powers.

Yes, hockey players are the baddest most toughest awesomest dudes that ever toughed and badassed.  You're still a chubby Midwestern guy in a Roenick sweater.

As an athlete or student of a University, you represent them on and off the field. Even when your outside a bar in the wee hours of the morning, stealing crab legs or putting the moves on some lady that's passed out. This is the type of individual the University is giving a free ride? That's some quality decision making skills there, Csont'e.

more proof that Michigan is better than a college in the state of Ohio. You've had their number in for more than a decade, yet you guys can't stop acting like a spurned girlfriend. Its ok, being good at football is nearly as impressive as being good at football and every single other thing like michigan is.

This is the problem with the B1G. In SEC Country, that tape never sees the light of day. The local sheriff has a cursory investigation, everything gets chalked up to a misunderstanding, the kid sits the first half (quarter) of the season opener (maybe), and everyone gets on with life.

It takes a total community effort to win a National Championship.

No no no no no!  Don't try to stop this discussion by being reasonable!  These arguments about how YOUR team is full of thugs and criminals while MY team is virtuous and charitable are some of the most productive discussions on the internet!  I'm sure that if we let it play out, someone will come to their senses and change allegiances any time now!

I suppose I could explain how that allegation was handled by a department completely separate from the football program, that proactively changed their policy beyond compliance and subsequently re-opened an internal investigation that had been closed for years until eventually delivering an extremely belated decision with no accompanying criminal charges hence why the guy was on the team the whole time. . . but this really isn't about justice, is it?

If you're willing to take this stupid trash-talking fight to the bottom of the gutter muck, let's at least get back to mocking my alma mater for beating tOSU only once in like a farking decade or getting PWND by Appalachian State and leave victims of violence out of it because it's pretty obvious that a sense of justice is the farthest thing from your idiotic mind.  There are plenty of reasons to laugh at Michigan right now but accusations of how they've handled off-the-field problems is really weak sauce relative to other FBS programs.  They ain't perfect but odds are anyone throwing rocks around here probably has a pretty brittle glass house of their own.

If we're talking about losing games - especially embarassing ones, to schools like Wossamotta U

their opponents the right OF way - "Touchdown, Wossamotta U!  Final score:  Wossamotta 222,
Michigan -10!")

Well, we're not entirely sure that the offensive line will be able to block anybody, but my guess is they might at least be able to block non-Big 5 conference guys.

That being said, I'd also think that Michigan could just chuck fades at Funchess on every play and probably win the game.

Nah, no SEC coach- especially not a legendary one- would risk their reputation over a kiddie diddlin' Defensive Coordinator. Hell, Bear Bryant might have shot the sonofabiatch personally.

Jackie Sherrill... would have used it as a learning moment, and we'll leave it at that.

It's an indicator of Paterno's moral character, absolutely. And anyone else in State College, PA, who knew.

And, yeah, I'm saying there's a difference between a college kid cold-cocking some other idiot in the jaw over a sports argument, and an apparently years-long systematic pedophile rape factory.

One of them is slightly more serious than the other.

Thanks! I hate it when people look at a situation at a school and place the blame on the school for the actions of its students. Further, I hate it more when that school doesn't take firm action toward the student based on the situation.

Just so we're clear, covering up child rape is bad, right?  Because if your original argument is that SEC teams are more willing to cover up bad shiat than their Big Ten counterparts, we have to acknowledge the most major piece of evidence against your premise.

Oh, got you. No, my original premise is that SEC communities have a better sense of how to handle this stuff.

College kid throwing a punch? Sit him for a game. Our kid getting paid $200,000? Cover it up, nobody got hurt. Rival school paid a kid $200,000? Cover it up. Don't snitch, Fulmer.

There's a reason the Fulmer Cup's a thing, and there's a reason the SEC wins it a lot. There's also a reason that Steve Spurrier said of Georgia "I don't know. I sort of always liked playing them that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended."

Don't throw a kid off the team for a fight. Sit him for the opener.

Heh, that tells me how long it's been since I updated my profile.  I moved to the east side, first for grad school (UM) and then for work.  The money's better over here, but man I miss living in Holland--what a pleasant place to live.

And I agree with you---you put 110 doofus young guys (who are self-selected for aggression and competitiveness) into a room, and you're guaranteed to get some amount of stupidity.  Their actions get amplified like crazy---how many dipshiat undergrad guys in America do the same sort of dumb stuff we see football players doing in the news?  Many of them, would be my guess (and I know I did some dumb stuff in undergrad...).  The difference is that when some frat bro punches a douche in another frat, it doesn't make national news---they get some probation, pay a fine, and they move on with their life.

How the schools should act in cases like these is always a tough moral question.  On the one hand, what the guy did (in this case) is really unacceptable.  On the other hand, he hasn't had a prior record of asshole-ish behavior--so do you revoke his scholarship and possibly take away a great opportunity from him over one error?  It's hard to say---he DID cold-cock that guy, which is shiatty, but then it's hard to justify a life-long punishment for a person who made a "heat of the moment" mistake one time.

IMO, there should be a standard "2 strikes" rule in big-time college sports.  Do something bad, you get suspended and placed on a kind of sports probation for a year.  If you apologize sincerely, keep going to class during your suspension, and generally show that you've improved yourself, then you get to keep your scholarship and keep playing.  If you fark up a second time or fark up your probation, then you're done.
