Simmons is off of Countdown and will host 18 one hour episodes of Grantland Basketball Show over the course of the season.

Zach Lowe on television should be fun to watch.  Mostly to see him squirm.

That's actually the least-creepy photo of Ballmer that's ever been taken.

Probably a good decision, Simmons didn't seem to take to TV very well.  Zach Lowe's a great read, but his uncomfortableness shines through in podcasts; I imagine video will make it much worse.

Just to make sure everyone's aware: Sterling can still sue, but any award he can get from here on in will be monetary only. The Clippers are gone. There is no way for him to legally get them back.

He's a great read once you clip the 'we must replace the lottery with this dumbass wheel system' talk out of every frigging article he writes.

Lowe is basically an excellent analytical basketball mind who will adapt eventually. I don't think he was a particularly great writer, just so effin' smaht that his content alone made it good.

Hel,l he could be so visibly nervous on TV that he'll miss his cues and even vomit on himself, yet even through all that, he'll add the best insight compared to anyone else.

Yeah, he's a one-man bandwagon for the wheel, which I think makes more sense in theory than practice.  It ignores the entire premise of the draft, which is less about assigning players to teams and more about helping the bads catch up.  Take out that mechanism, and you may as well eliminate the draft and make all newly eligible players free agents.

I'm on board with the idea of getting rid of the lottery and replacing it with the "worst gets first" model of the pre-lottery NBA (and all other professional sports except soccer, which I won't even pretend to have knowledge of).  I think if you own a NBA team and you don't want to win, that's entirely your prerogative.  Even in the world of revenue sharing, losing strikes at an owner's wallet enough that you'd want to avoid it.

I read almost all his columns and probably have only seen it once, but I'm going to flip the script on it and hope that it's going to be a wheel wherein all the possible draft picks come out and spin a Price-Is-Right style wheel to see where they end up. Sure, possibly all 60 picks could end up in the same team. That'd force some interesting decisions.

I think even the other executives at Microsoft hate Balmer too.  He probably hates himself.  I would hate myself if I were him.   And I'd also buy an NBA team if I could afford it because why the hell not?

But I'd be embarrassed to buy the Clippers.  I think I'd rather buy the Spurs.

...let me work with this. You just gave me an idea.

*The league pre-ranks the prospects in the order of their choosing. There's a system to determine who gets to go to the combine, right? They already do this in a way. So they could rank them like a week before the draft.
*In order, each prospect spins the wheel. (It must make one complete revolution.) The spaces on the wheel are proportional to each team's W-L record in the regular season, with some weighting given to playoff advancement.
*Wherever the wheel stops, that team gets first rights to the player, and they must decide right then and there whether to accept or reject the rights. If they accept, that's that. If they reject, the player spins again. After three spins, if all three teams have rejected, the remaining teams are given two minutes to make a claim, with the team with the worst record getting him.
*At any time, a team may declare that they're satisfied with their draft haul and withdraw from the rest of the draft. They are pulled off of the wheel and we resume. (I'm imagining the spaces being digitally inserted onto the wheel so this can be more easily facilitated.)
*The draft ends only when all 30 teams have declared themselves out.

Good one, sub. It actually took me a sec, but i haz a smart so potato.

Also, it's good to know that if I want to buy an NBA team I can bribe a woman to get dirt on an owner so the league can force him to sell his team and I can step in and white knight.

Finally, I think the lottery system could be improved by not allowing a team to move to the top three if they've already been elevated into the top three through the lottery system in the last 3-7 years.

Oh, and if in the up-for-grabs point of the process, no team submits a claim, that player immediately becomes a free agent. Like, the second he steps off the stage (or the person spinning the wheel for him should he not be in attendance). I forgot that contingency.

I liked Simmons on countdown. He has a very "eff you I do what I want" attitude towards ESPN, made the show delightfully awkward on occasion.

He will succeed in a less rigid environment. Spaced out shows will let him talk about the narrative and stuff which is what he is great at in my opinion.

As a life-long Bengals fan I can assure that losing & profits are not two sides of a coin. Winning & losing are opposites, but the coin is the owner's. The Bengals and Clippers made money throughout the 90s.

There was even a time when the Bengals were one of the top 10 most profitable teams (estimated by percentage). They didn't make the most money, but for each dollar in Mike Brown got more than a dollar back.

NBA franchises have had real problems regarding profitability (Bobcats were losing $20M+ during the 11-12 and 12-13 years, the Hornets/Pelicans had to be absorbed by the league to avoid bankruptcy, etc.)  I'm not convinced an NFL team is even capable of losing money.

Can we stipulate that the money bags have to be white cloth, with a giant dollar sign painted on, like in cheesy movies from the 1930s? Because, if so, I'm totally down with this idea.

Say what you will about the guy; he's the reason Microsoft ate a $35m chunk of Sega to take AM4 and make them Turn 10. Which made simulation junkies who love Falcon 4.0 and Armored Core rejoice so loud you could hear it from Osaka to Omaha.

It wasn't J Allard who could've worked THAT deal out.
