For Putin, wearing a shirt of any kind would be considered "formal attire."

I guess one theme about the rise of Hitler was that Germany wasn't ready for democracy.

I'm not sure that Putin and Russia don't add weight to that line of thinking.

Oh, I bet he Did wear a tanktop... And jeans with a button that suspiciously won't stay buttoned. And joined the Egyptian Pres in the sauna... "It is for to be getting hot in heer. I am to be removing pants now, nyet? Bite za pillow, I am for to be going in dry."

Do we know how Russian war tech compares with American nowadays?  I can't imagine it's as good, but if it's really cheap, we might end up selling our stuff to Egypt at a loss just to remain buddy-buddy.

Generally, Russian war tech is lower quality than US, one-on-one, but 3-4 times cheaper per unit, cheap spare parts (comparatively), cheaper maintenance, and you need less training for both using and maintaining it.

I can't imagine any possible use Egypt has for war tech where Russian tech will not be sufficient. Egypt won't be able to stand against the US or Europe with Russian tech, but neither would it be able to do it with US tech.

Funny story:  http://www.kyivpost.com/content/ukraine/battle-t-72-tank-stolen-from- k yiv-plant-seven-more-planned-for-sale-360329.html

There is a paywall in this article, but you will see an abstract at least. I couldn't find other article in English about it.

1 t-72 tank was stolen, and 7 more were planned to be sold to unknown buyer from Kiev's Tank Factory (Kiev is the capital of Ukraine). I wonder, WHO would try to illegally purchase t-72 battle tanks and succeed? Apparently, separatists can just buy their tanks from Ukraine state factories...

But THE funniest thing is that, apparently, the cost of 1 battle tank t-72, by factory's internal calculations, is, like, $20 000. 20 thousand dollars.

For comparison, Abrams goes for 8 million dollars per unit.

When I've read this, it was, like, WTF? :)

When the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe was signed to close out the cold war, the treaty stipulated that all European NATO countries would have an equal number of troops and hardware as all Warsaw Pact countries. This was acceptable to the Europeans because it was widely believed that NATO troops and equipment were superior to their USSR counterparts, and hence a force parity would prevent the USSR from invading.

Nowadays, Russia makes some fine weapons systems, arguably on par with US weapons systems (though we'll never really know unless we have a shooting war between us, because nobody has ever been willing to try out their latest and greatest in the proxy wars). However, their military is relatively poor, so you end up with a few elite units that are equipped with anything and everything they want, while the large bulk of their army is using tanks and rifles that are oftentimes quite literally 30-60 years old.

I hope a tank top works better for Putin than it did for Michael Dukakis in 1988.  (Yes, I know,
it's a different kind of "tank top".)

There must be a translation or currency conversion error. That is far, far to cheap to even be in the realm of possibility. That would mean they can produce that tank for the same cost as a consumer car.

http://en.ria.ru/military_news/20090806/155743859.html

He added that Venezuela could afford even new T-90 tanks, but that due to the low price of oil on current markets, it would be more logical to expect the purchase of the T-72.

The price of a T-90 main battle tank (MBT), manufactured by Russia's Uralvagonzavod plant is $5-7 million, while the price of a T-72 model is $1-2 million, the analyst said.

Wasn't the Syrian military equipped with Soviet tanks and Israel with American ones during the Yum Kippur war... and the Israelis were outnumbered about 3-1 in the number of tanks and still mopped the floor with the Syrians. Part of that was better tactics and training but some of it was just plain better tech.

No, actually. The Syrians were equipped with T54/T55/T62 tanks, the T62 being relatively recent and high tech for the time. The Israelis were equipped mainly with their take on the British Centurion tank and some M48 and M60 Patton tanks from the US. The Syrians had a major technological advantage in that their T62's were equipped with infrared night vision sights, which is something that the Israelis did not have on any of their tanks.

If I remember the military channel episode right, Israeli tanks could fire at better angle/degrees??? They could back up a hill and shoot downwards and the Syrian tanks couldn't.

The stuff we sell Egypt and many other allies are actuality gifts with fancy accounting, so basically all of it is sold at a loss.  It is done by calling it "foreign aid".  The money appropriated for the foreign aid by congress is put into a bank account under the name of the country but controlled by the U.S.  Then when the State Department OKs the weapon sales to a foreign country, the weapons/weapon systems are paid for out of the foreign aid account of that country which was created and and is controlled by the U.S.  The weapons, support, and training are all paid for out of the foreign aid.

That is why Republicans talk a big game about cutting foreign aid as a talking point but never does.  There are jobs in their district as well as military industrial complex profits dependent on it.  That is also another reason (besides corruption) that a lot of countries we give shiatloads of foreign aid to have crappy infrastructure for their people, but top notch military equipment.

It's too bad we can't replace the military industrial complex with the infrastructure industrial complex.

Depends on the discipline. When the Soviets realized that they couldn't match us dollar for dollar, carriers and subs and such, they shifted much of their efforts to cheaper "equalizers" - in particular, missiles of all sorts. As far as missile tech goes, they arguably make the best in the world.

Yep, but those there the actual numbers in the article. After I've tried to dig deeper into the story, it turned out that, apparently, the numbers are connected to "creative accounting" the management participated in rather than the actual costs of the tanks themselves.

*sigh* as usual, journalists don't have time or desire to research their articles a bit before printing.

Big Bridge is too hard core to have a complex.

It is a little bizarre, though.  Most folks make it through, day to day, without needing a weapon.  Yet we daily drive on roads, bridges, use water pipes, etc.  Wiki says the Patriot Missile is $2-3M a pop.  I get that's jobs and workers and whatnot, but why not repair some roads for the same profit? Why is the money in guns we don't need rather than useful shiat?
