How does getting doused by a bucket of ice water fight ALS?

Serious Black: How does getting doused by a bucket of ice water fight ALS?

It doesn't, it's the dumbest kind of slacktivism.

I thought the idea was that you could buy out of the icing by making a donation?  Its an either or...get doused or pony up some cash.

Well that's the final straw.  I'm not voting for him again.

"What a snob."

In his Monday morning newsletter, for instance, Politico's Mike Allen wrote, "Ya don't say 'no'" to Kennedy.

"He owes her," he wrote. "It's Ethel Kennedy. Ya don't say 'no.'  This should be interesting."

Obama "appreciates" the challenge but doesn't plan on joining the viral video campaign.

So he plans to make a donation to the ALS charity Ethel K is supporting.

Which makes sense.

I'm sure under other circumstances Obama might have joined in but knowing full well that FOX would put the footage on endless loop for the next 2 years kinda puts the kibosh on such a plan.

I don't know why he'd even bothering considering their reaction.  It's going to be negative no matter what he does.

Takes the challenge:  Lacking seriousness and engaging in frivolities in a time of crisis

Declines the challenge:  Humorless and aloof and lacking respect

Yeah. So Ethel Kennedy would rather get the ice bucket than donate some money to help ALS research?

What the fark is it with these faux business web sites that publish partisan political crap?  Exactly how is this supposed to affect my investment decisions, oh great Business Insider?

ok
The ALS Association's national president, Barbara Newhouse, said donations to the national office surged during the 10-day period that ended Thursday, to about $160,000, from $14,480 during the same period a year ago. That's not counting donations to chapter offices around the country, Newhouse said.

"It's just been wonderful visibility for the ALS community," Newhouse said. "It is absolutely awesome. It's crazy, but it's awesome, and it's working."

I'll admit it's effective, but I don't really get it.  Who are these people who decide "I wasn't going to donate money to ALS, but since Timmy down the street dumped some ice on his head, I think I'll donate"?

You'd think after reneging on having water poured on their faces because it's no big deal, Republicans would be more understanding.

It's a challenge system. Timmy down the street challenges 3 or 4 of his friends who then have the same option to dump/donate. Then those 3 or 4 friends each challenge 3 or 4 of their friends.

What about a compromise? He could stand out in the rain for half a minute, as long as it was at least tepid, or even lukewarm.

WHY WON'T OBAMA COMPROMISE?!

2014-08-12 03:22:58 PM
Typical.  Obama refuses to associate himself with the common man.  I bet he thinks he's too good to watch The Kardashians.

The weird part is that the most visible people of the campaign are the ones who chose not to donate.

Q: Will n0Bummer dump a bucket of ice water over his head for charity?

if YES:  "OMFG WTF is he doing participating in these juvenile antics, he thinks being president is some joke/part-time job/he must be trying to draw attention away from [current thing that the GOP is pushing as #1 BIGGEST THING EVER]!!!

if NO:  "OMFG WTF is this guy's problem, he doesn't care about anyone but himself, he thinks he's better than everyone and won't lift a finger to do anything but fundraise for the DEMONRATS!!!

Apparently the second option was appropriate if YES as well. Or maybe someone else in the thread just got his wires crossed.

I'm still waiting for Hannity to step up and be waterboarded to prove that it isn't torture. Where can I donate to make that happen?

Must be some kind of North East Coast thing. They just dip in the local river and there's ice cubes. Down here in South Texas, where it triple digits and a drought, the idea of recently iced water is a treat, especially if it's not superheated steam before it hits.

They'd complain that he's devaluing the office or some such.

Also, too, I'm going to shoot a kitten in the head with my trusty sawed-off shotgun if Obama doesn't tongue-kiss a moose in support of breast cancer awareness.

Mike Allen is actually a pretty decent guy. He's certainly a bit too absorbed into the process. Very close to his sources across the political spectrum, and while he gets a lot of great reporting out of that, he's not very good at stepping back and looking at the system as a larger whole. And I don't think he has a life beyond political reporting. But he's a very gracious individual. Open and respectful of everybody. Not at all what you'd expect from a guy who's probably the most influential media figure in DC.
