(New York Daily News)   The costumed miscreants that plague Times Square and try to bully unsuspecting tourists into giving them tips for photographs are hoping to form a union, which would make it virtually impossible to ban them   (nydailynews.com) divider line 166

Who are they forming a union against? Unions work because of power of numbers. Many employees, one owner. In this case they would be going up against the general public with nothing to offer but novelty photographs.

The MAN, man!

And "Costumed Miscreants" would be a solid band name.

Fark these people, yes. But, fark the Naked Cowboy, too. Fark the Naked Cowgirls and the painted naked showgirls, too.

If you take a picture with them, tip them, how hard is that. If you don't want to tip them, ignore them.

I vote we let them unionize. Then we refuse their demands. Then they'll have no choice but to strike.

A union? Against whom are they collectively bargaining? This would be a guild or a trade association at best.

No self respecting New Yorker goes near Times Square. Who cares, let them feast on the tourists.

/thug it up as a union, even better

I go to NY maybe once or twice a year, and am most certainly a tourist. I have zero desire to go near Times Square.

I see people wandering our the touristy parts of my city taking pictures and tipping the guy in revolutionary war gear, the gold painted gargoyle, the dance troupe, the street magician etc etc.

It doesn't hurt me even a little bit.

Famous Ray's of course... they have one or two around the area.

I too say let them do it.

If they unionize, the people who own the characters these guys are using will have someone to sue when it turns out the guy in the Spider Man suit isn't paying for the right.

Yup, they would then be no longer be able to hide behind fair use and be subject to licensing fees as a for profit enterprise.

"The costumed characters who have overrun Times Square, posing for pictures with tourists, say they're just trying to make an honest buck, and hope for warmer, fuzzier treatment from the city and its police force. "

It's the NYPD.  Considering the level of annoyance they cause they should be thankful they get to walk home at the end of the day under their own power.

I wonder if the trademark owners (Disney et al) will be more inclined to put the hammer down if they are trying to go legit.

I mean, some mexican in a homemade suit by himself isn't worth it for pursuing claims, but once they all band together and have a common organization, now its something to go after.

There's an easy way to solve this. Stop travelling to New York.

Seriously.

Put a dent in their tourism dollars. The tourism bureau will see it as a reaction to the nutbar unionization, and work harder to kick their asses out.

Also, stop travelling to New York anyway, because it's shiat.

2014-08-12 10:55:14 AM
I'm still completely lost on why this is a thing for tourists to begin with.

Well I'm not sure I'd want to seriously injure them. Just enough to let the aggressive ones know that they need to farking back off.

2014-08-12 10:56:04 AM
I am surprised they just don't let the NYPD claim an open season on them. They are usually pretty good at indiscriminate gunfire, so if a few of them got taken out, what is the harm when there are so many spares?

LemSkroob: I wonder if the trademark owners (Disney et al) will be more inclined to put the hammer down if they are trying to go legit.

Considering how many of the corporations have benefited by the cleaning up of that area I can see how some trademark enforcement would make this all go away.

I've not bothered visiting Times Square since they "cleaned" it up. Sounds to me like it was better with all the whores, skunk pussies, buggers, queens, fairies, dopers, and junkies.

Right now, there is little the corporations can do, there is a fair use argument. If they were to form a union though they would then be classified as a for profit organization and be subject to licensing fees.

I took my son to get a pic with Spongebob but the line was huge. Luckily, SB was in the store window so I told my son to go outside and press his face against the window and make it look like they won't let him in. Best character pic evah.
