I saw a really nice Westy parked next to a hotel I stayed at in Laguna Beach last time I was there that was for sale, guy had the slider opened so you could look inside and everything, it was gorgeous

A loan for that thing would have been about as much as the house payment where I live in Vegas, though it would have been paid off about 15 years quicker!

I used a westie to haul my race bike back in the 90's, and court/vacation with the now wife. Love them .

This is an excellent question and deserves serious consideration

As per usual.. he goes to a gym, or friends.

I always find it funny that every one of these stories are the same... depends on friends and family, gyms, etc. but yet don't need anything..

so meh...

Off-topic but watching Spade try to keep his composure during those skits is great.

That's great when you're 23.  I wish I had done something like that. But then you become an adult with adult responsibilities.

You could always move into a reasonably priced apartment and avoid this anguishing dilemma altogether.

I'ma guessin', a Westfalia in decent condition,  would cost a pretty penny.

I'm thinking he really doesn't get too many women that want to have a relationship with a guy living out of his van, even if he does call it a "minimal nomadic home".

Technically, you don't need something like that.  You could stay hygienic and non-smelly with sponge baths, and you could crap in a camp toilet.

It's not as nice as taking a shower, but you *COULD* do it.

Heck, back a few months ago when our hot water heater broke, we did just that:  I'd heat water up on the stove in the big pot we normally use for stuff like corned beef and cabbage, then take it into the bathroom.  Use a cup to pour hot water over yourself, then soap up, followed by rinsing yourself with said cup.

Or you could just get one of these:

At the close of 2013, twenty-something Sam Jacquette made a New Year's resolution: "stop doing everything I didn't enjoy doing and start doing everything I want to do."

I'd love to hear about the time he did something he didn't enjoy. Sounds like a really sad story. Punk.

I have to say, as a middle-aged person, the idea of downsizing to a Rockford-style lifestyle is so incredibly tempting or being able to live in a oversized conversion van on the beach. However, the bathroom arrangements always appears more of a hassle than I want to deal with.

Santa Barbara, eh?

I bet it works out well in a place where the temperature is agreeable 12 months out of the year.

You try and do that in Vermont in January on the wrong night and you'll be dead in a few hours.

80 sq.ft. of living space? A good burrito fart must drive this guy out of his digs for three hours.

Why doesn't he want to support his local school district? Contribute to local services?

"Paying your fair share" is more than a bumper sticker.

Once upon a time I was a tech at a Germain auto repair shop. Being the new guy I had to work on every POS VW that came in. EVERY VW Van smelled like BO, sour milk and dog pee.

I soon got out of that place.

So much THIS.

Oh, I am on my own, I am free, I am one with the world...hey can I bum a shower, take a dump in your house?

Can I hook up to your water, power...you are about as free as you can be until friends and family tire of your leeching

It seems romantic and wanderlust-y in theory, but you know that if this became a thing, it would denigrate into the whole living on the boat squatter routine, where some non functional rotting piece of filth is permanently plunked in front of a previously beautiful place.

So a beach bum/hippie lifestyle is newsworthy now?  I'll give him credit for not living in his mom's basement, but is this really that strange?  I know surfers lived like that in the 70s and 80s.

He doesn't actually have a waterfront condo in his Westie as the parking lot closes at 10:00 pm every night.  The linked article makes that clear.  Did not watch the videos.

It sounds like he parks there every morning, then goes to work?, then comes back, eats dinner hangs out, then drives to a friend's house where he parks in their driveway.  Articles weren't terribly clear but he isn't waking up each morning on the beach as it's implied.
