Holy crap!  I don't really follow MLB until later, but this is my favorite team and it's usually in the cellar.  Bravo!  Of course this probably won't last.

Yeah, I almost don't know what to do with myself. With the 03 team, you could kind of feel the wheels starting to fall off right around this time, but now? We might have a legitimate reason to be optimistic with a month and a half left.

It didn't hurt that the Tigers pooped the bed against the Yanks (.177 avg, 6 runs in 4 games) and sucked against Toronto.

Not nearly as high (we obviously don't have our division), but us Mariners fans are in kinda in the same boat.  The games, for lack of a better phrase, still count.  The last 4-5 years we could safely write our team out by June.

Yup. Now the M's are only 1 game out of the wild card. Meaningful games in August, yay! Plus Felix is on another Cy Young year with 16? straight games where he has pitched into the 7th or later and given up 2 or less runs! Wow!

Meanwhile, Verlander, the horse...

I'm beginning to wonder if the Tigers will make the post season. Bats need to heat the heck up.

I'm still surprised they did nothing to add offense at the deadline. I was pretty much expecting them to trade for Drew, Rios or someone else, because acquiring overpaid offensive-first players had pretty much been their team mantra for so many years.

They'll still make it, but the pitching is getting a bit worrisome for them. It's nice that they picked up Price then. The injuries to Sanchez and Soria don't help, and if Verlander is also hurt they're going to be going to some pretty questionable names at SP (Drew Verhagen and Robbie Ray, if I'm not mistaken).

With Verlander now an unknown due to his shoulder injury (gets an MRI today to figure out what is wrong), both Sanchez and Soria out for a while, and coming off a really long and hard 4-game pitching dual with the Yankees then a marathon game against Toronto before hopping on a plane to Pittsburgh the Royals should be able to pull away to a few game lead before the Tigers recover and the Royals falter as they did in the first half of the season.  Either way the bullpen is not going to be up to snuff if they meet the A's in post-season.

The Orioles have a 5 game lead on their division too. Over the Jays. It's bizarro baseball land today.

And I was just about to say that Verlander needs to know that women weaken legs, but there's no precedent for shoulders.

Besides, Kate Upton's a fair deal if you have to be hurt.

I was watching that game. The announcers initially thought it was the first base coach. I feared someone had a heart attack. That was a nasty spill. Hope the kids is OK.

After the next three with the A's it's a long road trip. Minnesota, Col, Texas and Minnesota again. An excellent opportunity to pad the record. We have a better record on the road.

The Royals aren't necessarily good....it means the Tigers are doing an el floppo grande.
(Not without precedent - how much lead did the Cubs have in the NL East late in the
1969 season?)

No, they are playing DAMN good baseball right now. The bats have heated up, especially Billy Butler, they're aggressive on the basepaths, and the pitching has been stellar. You can't attribute it all to Detroit. Really, it's a combination of both. Royals playing good, Tigers playing bad.

July 21:
Det 55-41
Cle 50-49
KC 48-50

Today:
KC 64-53 (16-3)
Det 63-53 (8-12)
Cle 59-59 (9-10)

So, Detroit is certainly in a bit of a slump, but, 16-3 is going to make up a lot of games vs almost anyone.

Even if the Tigers were winning KC would be leading the WC by 1.5-2 games. Which would still be better then most KC seasons at this point.

As a Royals fan for all my life, and someone who has been following, going, and watching these Royals, I have no idea how this is happening.  The simple thing to say is pitching...get the lead to the 7th and let Davis, Holland, Crow, etc. take over.  But outside of Shields, i don't think anyone else is a dominant starter.  And our lineup..Butler has only recently started hitting HRs, Moose is still at .200, Gordon 270's Hosmer was coming on strong but he's been out during this streak and will be out 3 more weeks, and Aoki, escobar, etc is 250ish or slightly better, and no power.  Their run production, HR production, offense is meh to bad.  But they keep winning.  It must be the BBQ sauce
