I figured this was a joke about the Royals being atop their division in August for the first time in a decade.

Oh finally. Hope he learned something during his stay at cheating camp.

Great. now all we need is the other 80% of our starting rotation to heal, and we might be able to claw onto a wildcard spot.

Tanaka could be back soon, no? That would be something. Not that the numbers are really in the Yankees' favor at this point.

Possibility, but it might make better sense to shut him down for the season. CC is done though.

Its a tough call, because the Yankees are still close to a WC spot (and would be in it if they didnt shiat the bed against the tribe last week), so its tempting to get a guy like Tanaka back in the lineup who could win you 2-3 more games down the stretch.

Considering how he played the last year and a half I'd say it's not just his season that's done.

Yeah, their record is a bit of a mirage - I can see a bit of Pythagorean comeuppance for them over the next 6 weeks.

Overall the course of this season, they're extremely lucky to be over .500; but if Tanaka and Pineda can come back and stay healthy / not suspended, they could potentially lower the team ERA by maybe half a run. That's got to shift the odds in their favor. Their rotation would be Tanaka, Pineda, Shane Greene, Kuroda, and McCarthy / Phelps, which -- if current trends hold -- doesn't look so bad.

Tanaka hasn't even thrown off a mound yet and they still haven't ruled out TJ surgery.  He's a few weeks away from any possibility of returning, and if this road trip goes badly, it might be too late.

And pitching really hasn't been the problem, they don't score any runs.

Granted, they haven't scored much, but in the earlier part of the year it seemed like all the starters except for Tanaka and Pineda were giving up 4+ runs every time out. And I just checked, they're currently 20th in the MLB in ERA and 9th in the AL.

CC and Nova are out for the year. As mentioned, there's a possibility that CC may be done-done. Tanaka is at minimum a month away, and even if the Yankees are still in it, if I'm Cashman, I just shut it down. Tanaka is meant to be the future.. you don't blow it in the first year.

Ugh.. two years in a row we have to compete with a walking trauma unit. I -would- say "that's the price of fielding a team that gets excited about the early bird special", but the three oldest guys on the team, Ichiro, Jeter and Kuroda, have thusfar proven to be the most durable.

Considering it's a safe bet that none of them will return next year, the team is about to get younger... and more frail? That's not how it's supposed to work.

Durability is about the only thing going for Ichiro and Jeter, since they're both *barely* above replacement level this year.

Jeter still had pretty good WASD

Ha.  I was talking about Drew with a couple of guys in my office this morning - he looks exactly like a guy who should be a good baseball player, but isn't.

If you look at the wild card spots; Yankees are either in or out depending how the road trips go; otherwise its seriously not going to matter for a championship; I see that not an option, to many injuries.

The second best part of that whole thing was Billy Martin sitting on that challenge until he needed it. Any time Brett was up anyone could have said "too much pine tar" but Billy held onto that trump until "ok now we play it."

Plan B: Dellin Betances goes all Old Hoss Radbourne and pitches all the innings for the rest of the season.

If they thought the offense would support him, they'd be doing that already.
