It is nice to see the cops cracking down on these guys.  Hanging around fleecing tourists in nasty ass costumes is not street performance. Playing guitar, being a mime, beating on a 5 gallon bucket drum set, those are street performances. The human statues, well 90% of them suck, but at least they are trying.

...and the aggressive ones that demand $5 from tourists b/c $2 is not enough, is bs.  I'm not one for overreaching copyright law, but these 'characters' fall under it.

/I liked how an immigrant 'activist' was filming the arrests
//to be fair, it is the NYPD

Good as place as any to point out that Civil War was farking terrible from start to finish and I never understood the love for that crapfest. Maybe not as bad as Final Crisis (or whatever that was called), but still pretty bad.

"There aren't that many things for kids to do in Times Square, so this was a fun thing for them," he said. "As soon as we got here, they wanted to take photos."

That doesn't help. Tourists actually want to take pictures with these guys? I kind of assumed it was a straight up aggressive shake down but this guy is actually complicit.

Hopefully the police will turn their  identities over to the IRS to make sure these hero's are paying taxes on the "donations" they receive and to the copyright  to make sure they've been paying their licensing fee's.

He has superhuman drinkard abilities. He can get almost 20 times more drunk than the normal human. That's gotta be a superhuman ability, and one us mortals should aspire to.

THANK YOU! The overall theme was good, and needed to be explored, but the execution... there shouldntve been a right and wrong side, they shouldve left it ambiguous, but thats not as easy to write.

Except for the mime, this sounds like Portland,OR, at least when I lived around there.

/ CSB: One guy with a metallic-paint job on his skin did the "human statue" thing near the Pioneer Place Mall; it was actually pretty cool.

NYPD should deploy Sentinels to wipe costumed camera botherers out. Surprised at Spider-Man. He normally sticks his camera to the wall and charges J. Jonah Jameson

The problem is too many of the tourists assume the characters are free props paid for by the city, sort of like the characters walking around at Disney World. Then the tourists get aggravated when money is demanded, especially if it was the "character" that initiated contact.

The street performers in the French Quarter are getting ridiculous as well. If you even glance in their direction, while still walking, they run up and demand you pay them for their performance.

I got hustled by these dudes a couple months ago. I started to take a picture and before I could snap it, Ironman had my phone and I was in a fake "fight" with Spiderman and Chewbacca. And it was fun. Halfway through taking pics, Spiderman said it would be $10, but I never felt obligated or threatened. And I got a ton of pics of me kicking their asses. So I get there fleecing people, but it's also not that much money, and in my personal experience, I have a positive memory and some fun pics.

Stop encouraging them. I get that you got hustled for $10 bucks and so now you have to say it was fun to relieve your cognitive dissonance.  But these guys are just aggressive panhandlers wearing bad Halloween costumes; it was more fun for them to take your money.

I'm kind of sad about Elmo. He has a reputation for saying unbelievably creative and filthy things, which is how I always imagined the real Elmo's internal monologue going.

Besides, look at his reaction to his buddy Spider-Man going down the other week. He knew it was just a matter of time.

Then these tourists are not very bright. I've been in many a tourist filled cities that have people in costumes making their money by simply posing for pictures and/or doing the statue thing. It's common and knowing what to do ain't rocket surgery.

Sure, if the farkers are doing a shakedown, that's bad, but otherwise, if you snap the photo expect to tip for it. Duh.

I was walking through Times Square Saturday and got handed one of those fliers by the cops, so I'm getting a kick out of this thread.

There's not much for kids to do in Times Square...

No kidding, dude. Get the crap out of Times Square; it's just a gigantic rube-fleecing machine. Take them to the Central Park zoo or something.

I don't think that's anti-Semitic Elmo. There are several regular Elmos, and the one who goes on obscene rants about The Joos has a dirtier costume than that guy.

Well, even if you go to a convention where there are some pretty epic-looking cosplayers... MOST of them are going to have no problem having their picture taken for free. Hubs has a pretty darn good looking Iron Man suit he made for Dragon Con last year, and he wore it on Halloween. The kids lined up to take pictures, and while I had to move on with kiddo to the other houses while Daddy took pictures, none of us minded or charged a single penny. Hubs got to AW for a while. Kiddo got to brag that "Daddy is Iron Man." The kids and even a few parents in the neighborhood had their night made.

Nine Hundred and Eight: and the fact they wanted Tony Stark to be the guy in the right... yet painted him as a super-fascist was bizarre.

I always got the impression that the people writing Civil War had some pretty farked up personal politics, like far-right crypto-fascist stuff, and they thought everybody else agreed with them.

Then again, it was near the peak of the Iraq War and the whole Neo-Con pseudo-fascist mentality that a lot of American politics had at the time, and the Civil War plotline was supposed to be kicked off by a 9/11 equivalent event (even though 9/11 happened in Marvel, at least it did at one point, I don't know if the sliding timeline has blurred past the fact it was 13 years ago now).
