Subby, you are a doubly-stupid person.

First, you are stupid for finding it odd that candidates for a position in the federal government should discuss their positions on federal policy.

Second, you are stupid for thinking that "almost no one" moves to Alaska voluntarily. Plenty move to Alaska voluntarily, and then the first winter shows which of them are strong enough to voluntarily stay. I doubt you've ever set foot in The Great Land.

Gee, it's almost as if national politicians can have opinions about things outside their own state...

2014-08-11 01:24:35 PM
Kinda like how mainland America has the largest ocean in the world between it and Asia and so therefore doesn't get any illegal immigrants from Asia...

ArkAngel: Gee, it's almost as if national politicians can have opinions about things outside their own state...

They can, but when running  to represent the voters of State X you would think they would focus on the issues the people of State X care about....in this case Fishing Regulations, Wildlife management, Oil and Gas policy, keeping the postal services' imperiled subsidized parcel delivery service without which half the state would starve....etc etc

The Densest state in the union by population is New Jersey with a population density , of 1,210 people per Square mile

Alaska is the LEAST dense with 1.3 people per square mile, or roughly 0.1% of NJ.  The next state up from Alaska is Wyoming with nearly 6 times the population density at 6.0 people per square mile.

I stand by my "nearly no one"

Obviously, the people aren't demanding they pay attention to those things, so they must not care that much.

Besides, immigration is the big scary thing right now, so they have to talk about it or people will think they don't adequately have the fear necessary to run this nation properly.

Like Joe Miller

Alaska may not have many Mexicans trying to live there, but they do have a legitamate stake in discussing immigration: Russians

Exactly this.  They voluntarily move to Alaska to avoid child support payments, court orders, and large debts.  No one forces them to do this, they do it on their own.

We'd love a flood of Russians.  They'd have almost Cuban immigrant status.

Joe Miller for liberty five o'clock shadows

You mean the Alaska where they suck money from the oil companies and redistribute it to state residents?   Those fiercely independent residents who just want the Federal Government to leave them alone after they're done subsidizing the roads, and planes, and gas, and in some remote areas, food?   Those FIAs who foisted she-who-shall-not-be-named on to the world?

fark 'em.
They deserve Miller.  Unfortunately, the rest of us don't.

Yeah, nobody moves to Alaska for the annual pay out from oil revenues. Especially not illegal aliens who might be able to double or treble dip with stolen identities they buy at the Walmart parking lot.

Nah, never would happen.

I guess so, since federal spending provides about a third of Alaskans' income.

Miller is polling terribly. All the flyers I get in the mail from Sullivan and Treadwell are just them attacking each other. No mention of Miller. Miller doesn't have a real job, he runs so he can expense his food instead of applying for low income subsistence permits.

Yes, people move here for $700-800 a year in taxable extra income.

The Simpsons movie was fiction FYI.

This.....

It may be a long way from Mexico, but it's a sea voyage (or airplane trip) from Asia with quite the thriving immigrant population, legal and illegal alike.

Alaska is becoming less "white" and someone at Wikipedia is concerned enough to document it. I wonder how much "worse" recent trends are.

Unfortunately almost all politicians from every state represent the underside of the pond scum of the population.
Judge a country or State by it's politicians and we're all looking pretty bad. Just look at the Presidency of the U.S. for the past 20+ years.

As a place to live though, of the several States that I've lived in, the one I'd love to move back too if they had more jobs in my field would be Alaska.

2014-08-11 04:38:40 PM
Hispanic/Latino is 6.6% of the population (2013) and growing.  It was at 5.5% in 2010.

blacks are still 3.9% of Population and Hispanics are only 6.6%

and given that Alaska only has 735,000 people total that about 44,000 Hispanics in all, enough to just about know all of them personally or sell out one professional soccer match

Alaska has more immigrants than you might expect. Proportionally it's still just a footnote compared to the rest of the US population, but ever since the bad old days of the gold rush (and beyond) there have been significant immigrant communities in the state, especially from Asia and the Pacific.

From a demographic standpoint, about 60% of all Hispanics also live in Anchorage.  That works out to placing the total population at about 10% for Anchorage.
