Article author apparently has never tried a Schick Hydro 5. Smoothest shave I've ever had, and each cartridge lasts me about three months.

I'll go with the Gillette CustomPlus 3 Sensitive, cheaper and does a better job  than their more expensive razors.

I spent the last 3 months learning to shave with a straight razor.  Will NEVER go back to disposable.  Much better shave and fark companies like Gillette.

Yes, we're going to compare the shiattiest disposable razor with razors from nineteen-aught-three; and conflate the perceived quality of the shiatty razor with all disposable razors EVAR!!!

xanadian: and conflate the perceived quality of the shiatty razor with all disposable razors EVAR!!!

That's the joke. They're all just as shiatty. I don't care what space-age metal you have in your 22-blade razor, those things are going to blunt after 1-5 shaves. And since you can't hone the steel back to flat, it will just suck at cutting hair. The pressure required to shave with any disposable scares the hell out of me. I tried plenty over the years until I just went back to my folding razor and safety razor (for when I'm in a hurry).

Having tried all 3 methods in the article, I'll stick with the Gillette Fusion.

Fark cheap-ass disposable razors with a single balde. Straight razors may give you a better shave, but its time consuming (and time is the most precious commodity any human can have - we only get so much in life and you can't buy more)

The Gillette Fusion gives you a damn close shave in seconds, with little chance of nicks/cuts. What more do you want?

This article inspired me to order another safety razor, my last cheapo one rusted out and had a horrible design it was an Egyptian model that cost me something like $1.50 and it had to be completely dismantled to replace the blade so using it was rolling the dice with cutting my fingers off.

This time I splurged a bit on the stainless steel model with the easier blade replacement feature.

Oh yeah, living large at Casa Del Brap.

Shaving's for wimps and women. Real men either have beards, like they're supposed to, or rip their facial hair out by the roots with duct tape.

Dollar Shave Club.

The 4 blade razors are worth the 6 bucks a month.  And I highly recommend their shave butter.  Since I signed up, I actually shave 2 or 3 times a week now instead of getting all grizzly in protest of paying 20 bucks for replacement blades.

This. Blades are dirt cheap and the razor will last your lifetime, your kid's lifetime and your grandkids's lifetime if cared for properly.

This. I use the Hydro 3 a lot, too. I shave my head and face every day, and I only have to replace my blade every 4 weeks.

Rick on Pawn Stars shaves his head with a single blade razor, saw it on an infomercial.

I watched a video years back where this guy would take his gillette (or whatever higher end plastic shaver he used) and would just rub it backwards on his forearm. This would smooth the blades back to sharpen them. I didn't believe it but tried it anyway. I can make a razor lasts for months with the same head.

Meh, I don't have the time in the mornings to mess around learning to use a straight razor properly, and there's no way in hell I'd use one to shave the coin purse. I'll stick to the schick 3 or 5 blade razors that last me about 2 weeks a piece.

Switched to DE shaving a few years ago.

1) tired of ripping my face apart with expensive cartridges
2) electric razors would pull the skin in and cut chunks of my face apart.

I tried so many brands and models that I just hated shaving with a passion.

Then would see Farkers talk about DE razors being so much better, looked into it, but still .... then got a new Schick model that had a single blade on the top of the cartridge, and as I used this single blade, found that I was actually not ripping my face apart and started doing my whole face with this single blade.

Made the jump, ordering a DE razor with some blades and gave it a try.

Realized two things.

1) I hated the fact that I didn't start using DE razors when I was a kid
2) people that whine about them do not know how to shave.

DE razors are 1000x better than anything I've ever used... years now, and no cuts, no pain, only a learning curve for the first two weeks (and a bit a redness because of this), but then, I had absolutely no one to show me how.

And seriously, DE razors are beautiful, they look like a real man's tool

Of course real men don't shave their heads. Shaving your head is what you do when you're vain, and that's not a real manly trait.

You have to have fine hair, as Dorco are probably the worse blades  I've tried.

Astra Superior Platinum are the best I've tried so far,

Sharks and Crystals (or Personna) are pretty good ones too.

I use the orange "5-blade (TM)" razors from CVS, they have a trimming blade at the top for sideburns and such and last forever.  That's my two cents...

The hair on my face is like tiny little goddamn trees. It doesn't grow in very thick, but each hair is so individually thick that I'm lucky if I get a third shave from any disposable.

The problem is it only takes two or three nicks to ruin the blade. 98% of it can be fine, but those few individual nicks will still cut you up enough that you can't keep using it.

I gotta leave a bookmark in this thread for later. I have to shave every other day, if not more. It sucks.

I just got a $50 Norelco clipper set from Costco. Best clippers I've owned for headshaving. Unexpected bonus was that the foil for shaving works really well. I normally just trim back the scruff, but today I'm fairly clean shaven.

2014-08-11 02:23:47 PM
I've shaved with all of those methods. While the straight razor does a nice job and has that retro look, the whole strop, badger brush, careful shave routine requires a load of time in the morning that simply I'm not willing to sacrifice. (I'll also point out that you can't carry a straight razor in your carry on bag if you're traveling, so you're going to have to check your bag.) If you really want the straight razor experience, find a traditional old man barber and have them give you a haircut and shave. There's nothing like walking out of there with the wind on your sensitive face and the scent of Clubman talc on your neck.

The safety razor is the worst of both worlds. It's a crappy shave, with little control, but still requires fussing and dealing with used razor blades. Absolutely not worth it.

I prefer the basic Schick two-blade disposable razor. Sharp enough to do the job yet safe enough so I can do it in the shower by feel. A pack of twelve retails for about ten bucks, and at least a couple of times a year they'll do a buy-one-get-one-half-off special. If I shave in the shower when my beard is very soft one of them will last a month. That works out to about two cents/shave for the hardware, plus whatever cream you decide to use.

Yep.  Bought one a few months back, and the only way I could be more pleased is if Kate Upton and Christina Hendricks fellated me simultaneously.

i like the nostalgia factor of using older technology. One year I asked my parents to get me a cool safety razor for xmas, and they got me the Merkur Futur.

Its incredibly cool, heavy, blades are cheap.  Gets a better shave than a sensor excel.  Give me that thing, and a spray can of barbasol and i'm good to go.

You will want to hold on to disposables if you ever trim your nether regions, though.

Gillette makes a number of different brands of blades in their factory in St. Petersburg, Russia, Astra being one of them.  I use Gillette Bleue Extras, which are just as nice and, since they're not imported from another market, cheaper than Astras.

I gave up shaving once I started to have five o'clock shadow around noon.

Ok real reason, I went to college where it is very cold most of the year, and the beard helped keep my face warm and was less annoying than a scarf.

That, and when I do shave, everyone around me tells me to never do it again.

//Try to keep it more Riker and less Duck Dynasty though.

2014-08-11 02:27:33 PM
I hate shaving with the fire of a thousand suns.  Disposables only last about two weeks for me.  Any longer they take so much pressure to cut that I end up with serious razor burn.  Then as insult to injury, the price of the damned things.

I've threatened many times to learn a straight razor.  Sounds like a DE might be a good compromise.

We laughed when the Onion rolled out this gem:

fark Everything, We're Doing Five Blades

Me? I got a tough beard and sensitive skin. The most I can do is two blades

Today's razors work better when dulled. And those lotion strips are the worst.

I'll stick with the two-blade Sensor Excel. I tried the three-blade razor because they were giving away a free sample. It scraped more skin off my face, but didn't shave the hairs any close. Three, four or five blade razors are just an expensive gimmick.

False. I have a special DE I use for down there. Never cut myself shaving either. I used to be proficient with my folding razor down there, but one crazy ex-girlfriend ruined me to waving blades down there.

I'm not going to say that using a traditional safety razors is the only way to get a good shave, but it's the only way I can get an irritation free shave... YMMV, as it should when it comes to grooming. But do yourself a favour, and get a decent brush and a good soap instead of the canned goo. Your face will thank you for it.

As an aside, traditional shaving also gives you an excuse to collect ;)

I can only shave with a safety razor and Feather blades. Everything else leaves me with a huge amount of irritation. A single blade lasts for a couple months and I haven't nicked myself in years. Very close shave too, the Japanese really know how to make a sharp steel blade.

I use the single blade safty razor like others have mentioned.  I run the blade backwards on my jeans about 10 times before I shave.  There is still a point were the blade is beyond repair but they seem to last about twice as long when I sharpen them this way.

My beard is made of thumbtacks, and my fusion blades last as long - and I shave my whole head.
