Why were they filming a gas station?  Did they know it was going to blow up?

Scratch that. If you look close you can actually see a gas leak or something coming from one of the pumps on the right.

Whatever it was, it looks like it started after they started filming.

That was about as good as a controlled explosion they did on a movie set in City Park in New Orleans.  Filming a Sly Stallone stinker.  They blew up a fishing pier/ramshackle shack out on a lagoon.

Those flames were gasoline, as well.  They shot up a little higher that this, but not as wide.

I could feel the heat from about 200 yards away.  It's impressive shiat.

Here is a better link, gas station goes BOOM! Unfortunately, no subtitles, and I do not understand Russian, so I don't know what started the leak. The people in the apartment knew that something bad had happened, which was why they were recording it. My guess is the gas is propane, but I'll probably never know what caused the leak.

Definitely gas vapour (e.g. propane) more likely than liquid gasoline and its vapours.  The first explosions happen by the cars on the street, but then the flames travel back (underground?) to the gas station.  The brief wave of flame near the cars quickly burns out indicating a heavy vapour.  The initial location is flame-free after just a few seconds.

Trying to figure out if that obvious vapor cloud is the fuel, or a fire-suppression system that doesn't have a chance of containing it once a spark hits the fuel vapor.

It was a pic in an article about a house fire. It was just so perfect that everyone talked about the picture instead of the article itself. The pic was subsequently the original for a PS contest.

Someone did a good job stopping the traffic.  The guy in the red shirt made it out alive, you can see him on the lower left later on.  Do they use natural gas or propane for fuel over there?  I guess so, because it definitely wasn't liquid.  Then later on it got into the buildings behind and maybe a kitchen fryer and all the wood made the smoke turn black.

Did they sell fireworks at that gas station, too?  Thought I heard a lot of smaller "popping" noises.

When seconds count, the local fire department is minutes away...

Or perhaps the station owners didn't pay their fire protection "premium" to the mayor...

I'm guessing a propane leak. It eventually hit the right mixture around something that was enough to start it. Hopefully nobody was seriously hurt.

Don't sprekin` de Russian language, but I'm fairly certain she was blaming him for everything that happened.. the whole time she was going off.

TheHighlandHowler: Why were they filming a gas station?  Did they know it was going to blow up?

Looked like a propane leak, the cops were already there, no idea where the fire department was. I'm sure all the fumes and sound from a leaking propane cylinder (which is VERY loud) alerted them.

From the very beginning of the video you can see white clouds of gas or vapor leaking from something in the station on the right side. They may very well have seen that and started filming.

This. The vapor can be seen near the pumps on the right and behind the right wall (the one on an angleto the building). The vapor is white, so it could be smoke but if so something fairly clean is burning, not petroleum or plastic. Likely a propane leak.

The fire seems to originate from the second of two stopped cars (the second is behind a tree). I'd guess that the propane fumes were ignited by the cars (at 1:15).

I'm kinda thinking the same thing. The video is just short of 7 minutes. Something must have alerted them to start filming and the vapor was visible from the start I would assume someone had already called the FD. Traffic is thinning by 1:10 so it appears someone was alerting oncoming cars to stop, but I can't see any police.

There is no way I'd go to a Republican Hospital, once you are born they actively try to  kill you.

Russia doesn't like to be bested in industrial accidents.  It's their national sport.

The video was running because it was obvious there was one heck of a propane leak that would eventually find an ignition source.  It looks like someone tried to start a car that is obscured by the tree, and ignited a flash fire, which propagated back to the source.

I don't know who stuffed the two tons of fireworks in the building as a joke.  WTF?

My favorite line from Red Storm Rising:

"I'll say one thing for Ivan. When he has an industrial accident, he doesn't screw around. "

I'll second the WTF on the fireworks. Still not on the scale of Enschede, though.

I'm also surprised I didn't hear car alarms going off. That seems to be the Russian national anthem for disasters (e.g. the Chelyabinsk meteor, or the truckload of gas cylinders going kaboom on the Moscow Ring Road).
