Their government was already farked, corrupt and totally inept at making their country any more than a shiathile.

I don't have high hopes for the new regime, but it can't be much worse.

Let the blood flow.  This is better than Game of Thrones.

The US has backed Maliki's opponent, and has implied that the Iraqis won't get any real help against ISIS until the current regime is replaced by something more inclusive and not just hell bent on punishing various ethnic groups for past grievances.

You don't get it. This was their government finally trying to get its act together, refusing to appoint al-Maliki to a third term. Even his own party withdrew support from al-Maliki. Now he's using the Iraqi army to launch a coup against the new government. So, no, this is not "grumpycatGOOD.jpg." This is bad, and can only serve to embolden the ISIS terrorists.

It's not a new regime.  It's the same old regime. Parliament tried to force out Prime Minister al-Malicki out and he's refusing and has the military supporting him, and he's doing shiat like trying to arrest the Kurdish President.

It's not so much that he's punishing them. He's just doing the old styled corruption of making sure his family is first at the trough, his people second, his friends third, and everyone else last. His mismanagement and dismissal of American troops turned sectarian ire into disarray in the face of a militant vicious sect (ISIL). The latest blunder is trying to keep the Kurds unarmed while they're the only cohesive group fighting the ISIL militants.

My thoughts exactly. Especially knowing that fractions of ISIS is the old Baath party.

If they lay of the Kurds, and go for Baghdad, who to support?

It's a little... colonial... to discuss plans to break up other countries. The heat from doing it with Kosovo is still rather high.

doyner: So is it too late to discuss a three-state solution?  Because, unfortunately, the next one will otherwise be "final."

Our Turkish allies have tolerated a de-facto autonomous Kurdish enclave within Iraq.  A recognized Kurd state is a much bigger issue and the Turks have legitimate concerns about what happens with the Kurdish population and areas within its borders trying to secede to join with it.  'Friends to friends and enemies to enemies' doesn't work if your friends are enemies.

Bottom line: can the US afford to piss off Turkey?

NOPE

okay, maybe I jumped to conclusions.  I was only going by the headline and a very cursory review of the article.  I'll dismiss myself from this thread until I learn more.

But if it's more like you say it even proves how farked up and corrupt Maliki is.

The Turks should have an even bigger problem with either a Sunni ISIS-dominated enclave of Iraq or a new dictator in Iraq. At least an independent Kurdistan would be stable, even if it does cause internal issues for Turkey.

Why is the USA considering anything do to with a civil war on the other side of the planet?

It's not their problem,  just stay out of it.
