Great band. Shared many fun evenings uptown and afternoons at the Jazz Fest with them. Godspeed, my friend.

Badgers: Poor old Johnnie Ray...

Come on, Eileen!

Hey CSB time. 5 SIX things most people don't know about the Dexys Midnight Runners song "Come on, Eileen"

1. The original single version of "Come On Eileen" had an intro playing Thomas Moore's Irish folk song "Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms" on a fiddle. That bit was shortened quite a bit for the video single release.

2. Johnnie Ray was a singer who was extremely popular in the 1950s who had hit songs like "Cry" in 1951 and "Walkin' My Baby Back Home" in 1952.

♫  "Poor old Johnnie Ray
Sounded sad upon the radio
Moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers cried, sang along
Who would blame them?"

3. The 'Vi's Stores' shoppe they play in front of for the video, is now the Brook Drive Mini Market in Kennington, London.

4. In the video, "Eileen" is played by Máire Fahey, the sister of Siobhan Fahey who was the former singer with Bananarama.

5. "Eileen" Was used by NASA as a wake up call for US astronauts... Eileen Collins was an astronaut on the Space Shuttle Discovery where, on the final day of mission STS-114 on August 7, 2005, "Come On Eileen" was used for their wake up call.

6. There is a comma between 'on' and 'Eilene' for a reason. "Come on Eileen" is not a song about bukake.

Aw, man, just saw them a few weeks ago. Was excited to see the original lineup back together. RIP Johnny Ray.

Saw the dudes in Fall River, MA a couple of years ago (without Johnny Ray) and Tiny Town open for Little Feat at Mohegan Sun in '98. Kind of pissed I didn't go see them when they came by a couple of weeks ago.

Johnnie Ray was also profoundly deaf due to a boyhood accident where he lost the hearing in his left ear, and performed wearing a hearing aid.  Due to his choice of emotional songs, he got tagged "The Prince of Wails" and "The Nabob of Sob".   He was also called "the link between Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley", which is probably the best description of his sound that I've heard.....

Yeah, this was a bad surprise to stumble upon yesterday afternoon. I hadn't been on Facebook in a while or I would've known sooner, but I had wandered over to the Times-Picayune site to read their obit on Idris Muhammad and caught a glimpse of a link to this news. I didn't know Johnny real well (hadn't seen him in a good 15 years or so), but have a lot of New Orleans-connected friends who've been close to him over the years. I didn't know he had stopped playing for a fairly long time. Awesome bass player, really good guy. For some reason I thought he was my age or even slightly older, but no. 56, too young.  RIP.

You left out Billy Idol's homage in "Don't Ned A Gun", but hearing aid or no, during the Eisenhower Administration You Don't Go Full George Michael In Detroit...TWICE!

A Subdudes thread?!  Too bad it took a death to make it happen.

Yeah, I didn't even bother submitting anything -- just assumed they were below the radar for most folks here. Given the circumstance, a green for this doesn't even make it to the level of bittersweet. Though it is nice to see a few fans check in.

Hey, there were lots of birthday threads too!
