Pittsburgh has an airport?

2014-08-10 02:18:25 PM

WTF Indeed: Pittsburgh has an airport?

Yea...its even considered International. In all seriousness, its one of the nicer airports I've flown into. I love that we have statues of a dinosaur, George Washington, and Franco Harris to greet you.

Why is it sad? Solicitations are irritating.

2014-08-10 03:21:45 PM
Those damn bell ringers are the worst of all

I found out recently that my great-great-grandfather was a Sally Ann chaplain in the late 1800s in Bumfark Nowhere, Queensland.

For a guy with an Irish Catholic last name, I don't have a whole lot of Catholic ancestors.

Maybe one day they'll get around to lifting the ban on direct flights to farking anywhere.

Because the Salvation Army is Americana, or something.

2014-08-10 03:26:03 PM
Probably because of the Salvation Army MANPADS.

Nothing sad about fewer solicitors in my opinion, Salvation Army or anyone else.

It's a very well laid out design. It's a shame that it has become the ghost town that it has, but looking at its geographic location and how the industry operates now, it's not too massive of a shock.

Who carries cash now anyway?  I guess airports have a higher percentage of people with folding money vs plastic, but long gone are the days when I make sure I have some bills in my wallet before I head out.

Yup, wanted to fly from Pittsburgh to Jacksonville, I had flown up direct but to fly back I had my choice of stopping in Atlanta, Charlotte or DC. Its a beautiful airport but I don't want a tour of the south to get from one place to another

Yeah, the airport is physically fantastic.  It's just that ever since US Airways stopped using PIT as a hub, the place has been a ghost town.

Would rather deal with them than the S.A. bell ringers, don't get me wrong I am sure the Salvation army people are wonderful but 5 minutes of those God damn bells makes me want to go Texas chainsaw massacre on em

Solicitors don't really bother me, but I think they're unnecessary in virtually any public place. Just designate an area of a terminal where approved charitable organizations and non-profits can display some literature or something. If I'm that moved or inspired, I'll donate more through my phone sitting at the gate waiting to board or once I get home/to my destination compared to the pocket change I'd throw in a red tin anyway.

Banning solicitation is good

Making exceptions is problematic

Therefore, dont make exceptions

/it's not like you cant give to [insert favourite/ worthy charity here] anywhere else

//just my personal opinions, in some respects, the Sally army are dicks and there are better & more worthy homeless charities out there

THIS.

/if there are exceptions made for those nutballs, it should be to BAN them by name and allow saner groups to solicit.

The Salvation Army takes in millions, doesn't pay one penny in taxes (and I bet they don't pay those freezing bell ringers anything either), and lobbys the government to pass anti-gay laws.

Fark em! I hope they get barred from more locations.

Pretty much this. I was able to convince my mom to stop donating to them happily.

Indeed, this is a good step. Salvation "we think it'd be cool if the gays died" Army shouldn't be allowed to solicit in any public space anyway. Can't work up any sadness for this lady who cheerfully aligns herself with that kind of organization.

Ok, that's somewhat true about the airport; many people do drive to Cleveland to catch flights.

Still can fly straight to Houston and Chicago, among a few other places.

Should have earned the HEROtag.

If you ban any panhandlers, you need to ban all of them.  Especially them Moonies and the Harry Kritters.

I get panhandled every time I go to the airport, it is a king sized pain in the Obama.

2014-08-10 04:02:55 PM
That airport probably uses public tax dollars. Salvation Army is a religious organization. It would be unconstitutional to allow them to proselytize on public property.

Yeah, pretty much the only direct flight options are to major hubs.  It's the same selection of flights that you typically see at small, regional airports.  It's a shame, because I loved living in Pittsburgh, but because of my job, I just can't live in a city whose airport is so inconvenient.

It baffles me, too. No one leaves PA except to go to Myrtle Beach or the Outer Banks. There are so many places to go, but almost every Pittsburgher I know goes there to vacation year after year.

I started my boycott of the SA when the one in my town paid Kirk Cameron to come and speak to them, and everything I've learned about them since then has only reinforced that decision.

Huh. I don't know anyone who ever vacations there, and I've never had the desire to go there myself.
Wait, I do know one person who went there once, but it was for free.

Could be worse, of course.  I live in Philly now, and the major vacation destination for people here is the god damn Jersey Shore.  Come on, guys, if you're going to go on vacation, go more than an hour and a half away.

FACT:  Every time I get panhandled by a Moonie, I reply: "If you want money, get a job."

The Moonies always reply:  "But I HAVE a job!"

To which I say:  "Then get out and go to working, and quit panhandling like a useless parasite!  You are not crippled, you are not blind, you are not retarded---well, a little maybe so---and you could work if you wanted to.  I concede you are not worth minimum wage, but until you make some move to set yourself straight---you never will be!"

Without exception they all get mad at me when I say that.  A panhandler feels he has a "right" to be a burden on his betters, and they have a duty to support him.

And he can go f himself.
