Hitler's abuses were a prelude to the age of Obama, too, in that he failed to exterminate all the coloreds.

"...When the president does it, that means that it is not illegal." Immortal words taken to heart.

So, big deal... some mistakes were made, some minor crimes committed. Gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet. A delicious, tasty omelet. The only difference between Nixon and every other President since then? He got caught. Arrroooooo.

But, he did do some good. China. Metric system (*cough*), actually got us out of 'Nam using his secret plans. And of course, defeated the last sabertooth in single, unarmed combat. Oh, sorry. I've just been informed that last bit is a damned dirty lie, not a sabertooth... a "Smilodon"... Damn hippies and their revisionist history...

EPA, clean water, clean air. It was said of Nixon that he was the perfect one to open China, because when  you shook hands with him, you always checked to make sure you still had your watch on your wrist.

The most serious charges against Nixon had nothing to do with Watergate. He was repeatedly refusing to spend money appropriated by Congress on stuff he considered unnecessary, like urban housing. He called it "impoundment." Watergate was just the headline to drive the real charges.

Who the hell in their right mind would compare Obama to Nixon with a straight face?

Yeah - Nixon got in trouble for asking the IRS to give him information on people's tax returns (and was told, in no uncertain terms, "no"), while all Obama's people did was hand over opponent's tax returns to political groups, use the agency's powers to shut down political groups, lie about it to Congress, and then destroy the email evidence.

No comparison at all...

Next you'll tell me there are people who also think a few government employees dying in a surprise assault on an embassy in hostile territory is as bad as ignoring intellence reports prior to the worst terrorist attack in US history, which killed thousands and torpedoed an already weakening economy; then following it up with two expensive invasions that killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of people while failing to capture or kill the leader of the group that attacked you...all based on fake evidence and scare tactics that themselves could be called terrorism and were used to gut the Constitution.

But sure.  Let's go with Obama = Nixon.  Because "N*****gate" is what you really want to say.

I will forever link Nixon's " I Am Not A Crook" speech to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Especially when the audience participates by shouting obscenities and mocking him. Good times.

The string of abuses attributed to the Nixon Administration eventually included maintaining an enemies list and subjecting people and organizations on it to increased scrutiny and harassment by the IRS, as well as issuing politically motivated orders to the CIA and FBI.

At one time I wondered where Republicans got such a vivid imagination in things they accused Bill Clinton of and stuff they currently are accusing President Obama of doing. Mainly because they sure don't use the same imagination when it comes to coming up with creative solutions for actual problems, and suck so bad at governing.

But as I get older and learn more about history and stuff revealed about the Nixon, Reagan, and both Bush administrations, the accusations hurled at Democratic POTUS's are stuff Republicans have done, currently doing, or want to do.

"He was a swine of a man and a jabbering dupe of a president. Nixon was so crooked that he needed servants to help him screw his pants on every morning. "

"Richard Nixon was an evil man -- evil in a way that only those who believe in the physical reality of the Devil can understand it."

"[Spiro Agnew] was a flat-out, knee-crawling thug with the morals of a weasel on speed."

"Agnew was the Joey Buttafuoco of the Nixon administration, and Hoover was its Caligula. They were brutal, brain-damaged degenerates worse than any hit man out of  The Godfather, yet they were the men Richard Nixon trusted most."

"Kissinger made the Gang of Four complete: Agnew, Hoover, Kissinger and Nixon. A group photo of these perverts would say all we need to know about the Age of Nixon."

Well in a way, Nixon's abuses WERE a prelude to the "age of Obama". Watergate essentially created an atmosphere of distrust for the government, which obviously still exists today, and is the single biggest factor in recent hard-line conservative electoral victories.

I actually had a Foxbot ask me if I really thought all these scandulls could be fake...as though the sheer number being churned out by political foes was proof they were real.

Fabric_Man: The most serious charges against Nixon had nothing to do with Watergate. He was repeatedly refusing to spend money appropriated by Congress on stuff he considered unnecessary, like urban housing. He called it "impoundment." Watergate was just the headline to drive the real charges.

I still believe the real reason Nixon went down is because his own party abandoned him.  They abandoned him because he was vengeful and spiteful and saw everything purely in how he benefited.  He wouldn't necessarily work to prevent anyone else from benefting from deals, but it was never his concern, even within his own party.  And so his own party grew sick of him.  He was never really a Republican insider, as he kept saying over and over himself.  He always felt like an outsider, and therefore acted like one, and this was widely resented.  The more you hear of the tapes, the clearer it becomes what a paranoid little toad he really was, and how impossible it was to like or respect him.

He was also dirty as hell, there is no doubt about that.  But when you look at what St. Reagangod got away with regarding the Iran hostages, and the whole stinking Iran-Contra mess, the Honduran death squads, the wink-wink-nudge-nudge given to Wall Street, it is clear that you can do far, far worse things than Nixon ever did (at least, that we know about) and get away with it.  You have to keep your own party on your side, and you also have to charm and work with the other party.  Do that, and you can feast on the brains of children and take your place in the Hall of St. Presidentgod Heroes.

At least, that was true until people like Gingrich came along, and decided that Democrats are sick, twisted, warped, pathetic, etc. etc. and must always be destroyed.  And they are the same ones who are the first to scream about the politics of personal destruction.

Anyway, from what I've read, a fair amount (but by no means all) of the obstructionism Obama has experienced can probably be attributed to one similarity he has to Nixon, that he feels he is an outsider and is not a fan of hobnobbing, even with his own party, much less the Republicans.

Nixon was running a criminal organization.  Legitimately, actively criminal.  He had an enemies list, not just of political opponents but anyone who tried to stand in his way.  Everything was fair game.   He was a paranoid, racist asshole.  He was absolutely a crook, with no respect for democracy or the rule of law.

Gordon Liddy expected Nixon would have him killed after Watergate, to the point he wanted to plan his own death.  That's the level of fanatical devotion and intensity these people were operating at.

Here is effectively the overall thesis:

"A press that laid out charges against the Nixon Administration in gruesome detail is bored by Obama Administration gun-running, dissembling by the U.S. Attorney General, and use of the IRS to play political hardball."

In other words, made up scandals.

I would say it's human nature to get upset and/or deny wrongdoing.  Or pin the blame on a 3rd party.  This is what kids do.

Blaming the other guy of your own misdeeds is a learned tactic and a political tool for blurring the lines.

Its not the numbers of executive orders that are issued, it's the content of those orders. The president can issue as many of them or few of them as he wants.  So long as they don't violate the separation of powers or the constitution or existing law, its all peachy.  Re-writing laws and bypassing congress because the House refuses to give into your every little whim is not peachy.  Its unconstitutional.  He's not going to get everything he wants.  He needs to accept it and start meeting conservatives half way.  Compromising isn't give me everything I want or you aren't compromising, which is pretty much what the current administration and senate majority leader are doing.

a true leader figures out a way to get people to work with him.  I'm not taking any blame away from the idiots in the house.  I just don't see any leadership in Obama. I wasn't a fan of Clinton but he at least found a way to work with those who were against him.

As someone stated earlier Obama views himself as an outsider much the way Nixon did and maybe he feels he has to do it all himself or only he knows best i don't know but something is off with his leadership skills.

Pffft, that's funny. You're funny.
