It finally happened... Smoke went nuclear.

From that Deaspin link it sounds like Tony was mad, gunned the engine and the back end kicked out (this was a Sprint car race and Canandaigua is a dirt track) and hit the other driver.

2014-08-10 12:38:56 AM
I don't even...someone on twitter is saying the other driver is only 17. And @OrangeCone confirmed the news that he is dead.

This is gonna cause some serious shiat to go down.

Apparently the guy flew 25 FEET!

Fox Sports 1 breaks the story, and ESPN is...talking about Johnny Manziel.

That's some fine reporting there, Lou.

Smoke probably didn't try to hit him, but that was a monumentally stupid thing to do in a 700hp machine

Yeah, it doesn't sound like hitting him was necessarily intentional, he may have been trying to just give him a vehicular FU by revving up and kicking some dirt in his face, but ended up fishtailing and hitting him.

Still, even if that's what went down, it's likely vehicular homicide.

Tony has been known to lose his mind from time to time, but this one takes the farking cake.

If that is the case, I can see NASCAR forbidding drivers in the top two series from racing any other events from now on

As much as I don;t want it to be true, if it is I can never ever back Tony again. I always liked guys like him and Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski because they are all so damned talented and they don't really give a fark what you think about them. That said, I could never follow or get behind someone who killed someone else, possibly on purpose. There is just no call for that, anywhere, anytime, ever, period.

I can see a ban on getting out of your car unless it is on fire. No more throwing helmets at passing car when pissed.

No doubt. After Smoke broke his leg last year, and Jason Leffler getting killed and now this.

If this is true, Tony's career is over and maybe his life. If the details are true, that's not manslaughter. That's murder.

If that was the case, Tony should know more than anyone what those cars can do. He's driven them enough times to know how they can slip and slide. For him to do that would still be Grade A stupidity.

Word is coming in that the other driver, Kevin Ward, is dead.

Really this story is in the hands of the Internet right now. FS1 has broken the story, but they aren't gonna say much of anything until its all "official"

Why do these guys get out of their cars? Dude stays in his car and this doesn't happen. Watch and see, tomorrow NASCAR implements suspensions for any driver that gets out of his car and tries to confront anybody still in their own car.

No doubt, it's a stupid move no matter the conditions, but especially on a dirt track.

This whole mess is so scary and so freaking... I don't even know what the word for it is.

I've saw 'reports' that the dude Stewart hit had died. I hope it's not true, but I got a bad feeling it is.

I want to believe that Stewart didn't do it on purpose, or even meant to hit him. The car must've got out of control...

Ugh, this is going to be another black eye in all of motorsports for awhile... at least in this series and NASCAR,where Stewart was.

2014-08-10 01:00:30 AM

Professor Farksworth: Nor ESPN.com or Sportscenter "Live".

Why would a sport channel network keep a 24 reporter and staff on call 7 days a week to break the rare 'sports' story unrelated to a scheduled event that's suddenly and startlingly unexpected?
