(Courthouse News Service)   So anyone remember when the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society claimed one of their ships was rammed and sunk by a Japanese whaling vessel? Yeah, about that   (courthousenews.com ) divider line

Been waiting for this...

Paul Watson is going to get a strict lesson on why you don't fark over people who are backed by money.  He left Bethune to rot in prison after promising him full organizational support for the sham 'captain's arrest'.  They've probably been building their case since then, waiting for the optimum moment to strike.

Paul Watson is a shady MFer, and ex-crew, ex-wives, ex-society members, and documentarians agree.

Actually according to the article the plaintiff stipulates that it was damaged in an incident with a whaling vessel. Their contention is that the ship could have been repaired, but was instead scuttled for publicity reasons. On top of that Sea Shepherd then encouraged and guided fundraising to replace the vessel and then misappropriated the funds.

Personally I thought the concept of Whale Wars was interesting for the first TV special, but the series was an endless train of sanctimony, poor planning, and "rebel chic". Maybe you need to be in Paul Watsons presence to not think hes a cross between a chucklehead and a prick. Hmm... Paul Watson, Chuckleprick at Large.

I'm a personal fan of how many times they said, "OUR LIVES ARE LESS IMPORTANT THAN THE LIVES OF WHALES, EVERY PERSON ON THIS SHIP IS READY TO DIE FOR THEIR BELIEF", only to screech about their safety at the first whiff of danger.

"MEMBERS OF THE TEAM GOT THEMSELVES STRANDED, WE HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THE WHALES AND THE CREWMEMBER'S LIVES!  HUMAN LIFE CANNOT BE WASTED."

It's a great example of fantasy vs reality, and why you have to take passionate claims by activists in general with a grain of salt.

The thing is, the Japanese actually aren't a big fan of whale meat. But there is a cultural pride thing going on and they do NOT want to have a tradition broken because some Americans got their panties in a twist.

If the asstards actually backed off, gave the Japanese a respectful distance, and worked with the US State Department to try and resolve the whaling, there'd be a far higher chance of success.

You couldn't be bothered to RTFA, could you? Their vessel was compartmentalized and able to sustain that kind of damage without sinking. They could have returned to port and had the damage repaired. However they have now   formally admitted that they deliberately opened the sea-cocks and scuttled it (after removing all the equipment) because they thought it would make for better fund-raising press.

Umm this video shows the Japanese Whaling ship actually turned towards the vessel which was stopped; at the last minute however Ady Gil should of backed off; however they "accelerated forward" - it appears the Japanese ship was trying to get them to back off when they turned and the Ady Gil gunned foward.

after a 14-foot portion of its hull broke off in a collision with a Japanese whaling ship near Antarctica. []     The plaintiffs claim Watson and his crew spent 30 hours gutting the Ady Gil of $100,000 to $150,000 worth of equipment, then "opened the sea cocks and hatches so she would flood."

So, half-true.

I am so sick of these latte-sipping millennial hipster whaletards driving their Prius boats around the oceans, "we protect this species of whale, but it's very obscure, you've probably never heard of it," with their coffee table books and their chin beards and their mommy's basements and their Cheeto-stained fingers, and the second anything goes wrong they scream "MOMMY SAVE ME" and poop their diapers.

The secondary question is did they even have anyone at the wheel to back it off or go forward? There were at least 3 of them on the deck at the time of the collision. Despite their claim to die for the whales would they have taken the chance of getting smashed against the hull of the whaling vessel to damage their own boat for publicity?

One Bad Apple: What I can't believe is that with the dozen or so camera and production people onboard for that lousy Animal Planet show NONE of them came forward and called bullshiat as it was happening.

That's because there were no actual camera or production crews on board at the time. This show was not done like "Deadly Catch" where the network sent their own people to shoot and set up cameras at all angles to see it all. It was purely the crew of the Sea Shepherds shooting raw footage and then a production crew sympathetic to their cause splicing all of that together and overlaying audio to make the message mandated by Animal Planet.

I watched the show (torrented it actually, there is no way I'm going to give AP a pennies worth of advertising dollars for this particular show) just to laugh at the shoddy seamanship that almost everyone showed. The one person who showed even a tiny bit of professionalism in navigation and suggested drills to get the crew prepared for launching boats was slapped down. She left which was a much wiser move than joining up with those clowns in the first place.

The only other sort of sane person was the helicopter pilot. At least he had a sense of self preservation and wouldn't cut corners just to go out and look for whaling ships. You could see that it irked Watson but he still had to capitulate on camera. I can only imagine the pressure put on the pilot that happened off camera.

The Soviets used to do that to our Naval vessels all the time. The best was in the path of an underway replenishment. Then you have 2 vessels that need to change course. *And* disconnect all of the fuel hoses.

I can drive a dump truck full of wet sand down the wrong way on an interstate. The damage caused would be very real but that wouldn't absolve me of wrongdoing because I violated the rules of the road.

And yes, they are seafaring dumbasses. The Concordia captain and crew are light years beyond the Sea Shepherds as far as professionalism goes.

Not exactly what happened, Sea Shepherd played up that angle knowing that most people don't know anything about ship maneuvering, the Ady Gil approached the Shonan Maru from starboard heading toward port across her bow, now the thing to remember is the Shonan Maru is a 18 knot vessel (about 20 MPH) with about 750 GRT (gross register tons) that much mass takes a while to respond to the rudder. The Maru captain saw the Gil approaching from starboard heading to port so he ordered a rudder change to starboard so that as they closed the Maru would be moving away from the Gils direction of travel so that the CPA (closest point of approach) would open up for safety, the Gils captain knew this would be the standard reaction to his maneuver and throttled back to place himself in what he knew would be the Marus projected course, the Maru captain saw this and ordered hard to port but as I noted earlier response to helm commands on large slow ships like her are slow so she didn't start her port turn till after the collision happened. To people with no knowledge of ships it appears then that the Maru swerved toward the Gil when in fact that turn had been ordered prior to the Gils abrupt stop. the Gils maneuvering wasn't to make them hit her, their captain already knew the collision was unavoidable by the Maru, the Gils maneuvering was to place the point of collision where it would do damage without actually smashing into the crew compartment.

You know there are hundreds of years of naval law and a good amount of common sense that contradicts you opinion right?

Then again maybe you welcome a fleet of heavily armed Chinese freighters in dock at San Diego, San Francisco, Miami, New Orleans, New York, Boston, and Baltimore.

This is something that most people won't understand so forgive me if I dumb it down for the less than nautical people out there.

The Ady Gill was like a bicycle facing an SUV. The SUV was driving down the road when the bike blew through a stop sign and crossed the SUV's path from right to left as the SUV saw it. The driver of the SUV assumed that the bike would keep on moving and changed lanes from the left one to the right one so that they would pass behind them... but the bike rider stopped dead center in the right lane because "Fark you SUV!". The SUV swerved and only clipped the front tire instead of smearing the bike rider down 100 feet of pavement.

Am I missing anything?
