Hero? Seriously? Don't sully the word by applying it to this guy. Do yourself a favor and raise your standards.

He was okay. I don't think he'll get cut this week.

Saints run game looked good.

The only person who can Singlehandedly play a game of football is a certain former coach of a certain midwestern team whose name starts with C, ends in O, and in the middle is "hicag". Otherwise, that's silly.

Here Comes Everybody: Please, sports media. I wish the guy well and all, but don't give him the Tebow treatment.

Yeah, I was at a restaurant with some friends celebrating one of them getting a full time job (so that she could quit her part time job at a grocery store that she hated in a week) and they had the Saints/Rams game on the TV(s).

Before the game started, "MICHAEL SAM'S DEBUT!!!  DID YOU KNOW HE'S GAY, BECAUSE HE IS!!!!"  Ugh....

Watched the highlights of the game on NFL.com's site and they show 2 plays from him...one play of him chasing a QB.  Commentary:  "look at that hustle, that's what he brings to the table!"  Me:  "uh...anyone would be chasing the QB for an 'easy' sack...*facepalm*  The second play that 'he made' was helping tackle a RB...Commentary: "look at that tackle!"  me:  *double facepalm*

Best of luck to him but good grief...

I'm hoping he gets cut and the Cowboys pick him up, because he still might be an improvement over who they're running out there now.

If this guy can manage to get a sack in the preseason, the Rams will be forced to keep him on the roster because of the threat of discrimination lawsuits from the gay agenda.

Viewing this overblown hype, I think that any marginal division one college team that wants to move up in the polls should seek out an openly gay player, give him some publicity, and trot him out on the field at regular intervals. He doesn't have to be a starter---or even real good, just not suck ass terrible. ESPN will move mountains to show that team on television, using their old trick of moving that team up in the polls the week before the game to generate higher ratings.

Gays have gone from being outcasts to being money in the bank. I don't understand why this isn't being exploited by the pr wizards.

A couple good plays is what you want is preseason. A couple good plays like that every week get you on the team.

I understand the backlash on how the media has overplayed the story, but give him credit where it's do.

He might be good enough to warrant a roster spot if he can clean up well for special teams.

He'll be better on special teams, which is where he will eventually end up. He's not big enough for defensive end and not fast enough for LB.

He's got a lot of work ahead of him. He's gotta beat off 48 guys to make the final roster. That's a tough nut to swallow.

Eventually it will be no big deal. There have been no problems with Robbie Rogers and the LA Galaxy. Actually what Landon posted once on the team whiteboard shows how accepted Rogers is.

All of them are shorthand, but I think you're right that 'rest' usually refers to a portion of something as opposed to a whole collective.  I'm actually not entirely sure that 'are' is ALWAYS used with 'rest', but my interest in this has limits.

LOL very nice. And here's the rest of it: when the rest refers to a part of a whole, it's singular, when it refers to the remaining parts, it's plural.

The easiest test is to try to substitute either it or them and go from there.

The rest of us are not convinced. The rest of the population is.

IRC, the generally accepted rule is that mini Ditkas have 1.8x proportionate strength.

I wonder where Sam would have gone in the draft if he weren't gay. I think fifth or fourth seems reasonable for a tweener defensive player of the year in the sec.

Also, the packers' Desmond bishop was one of those players with all the wrong measurables who wound up having a decent NFL career because he was smart and tenacious. I think Sam could be the same or better.

Probably not.  He had an awful combine (finished sixth lowest of all players - besting only three quarterbacks, an offensive lineman, and the linebacker for the worst team in the big ten) that sealed his fate.

Jackson Jeffcoat went undrafted this year despite winning the Hendricks award (also won by the likes of Suggs, Clowney, and Chris Long) and nobody says boo about him.  Michael Sam is likely a backup or special teams player - typically a 6th or 7th round selection (or undrafted)

I know you're just derpsnarking here, but just to clear it up...

there are 90 on the current roster on each squad

that means he has to worry about 89 other guys

the final cuts go down to 53

89 minus 53 is 36

So, he only has to beat off 36 other guys, not 48

*technically correct is best correct
