OK, gun shows aren't supposed to involve shooting.

Even though I am a lifetime member of the NRA I don't go to gun shows, too many weirdos if you ask me.

Though to be fair TFA mentions only events where no live ammo is allowed will be able to serve alcohol, so I'm not really seeing a problem.

Why?

EEspecially since the gun show inspects all guns coming in the door already and makes you empty them AND locks them in a way that you can't fire them. Usually by running tie wraps through the slide.

If you can't bring in ammo, the show doesn't sell ammo, they make you remove any ammo you have, and they make you disable your gun before entering, all of your scenarios are shot to shiat.

PPun totally intended.

This is just extra revenue for the stadiums where we have these.  Alot of the gun shows here are held in large arenas (20K-50K+ seats) that sell beer during the hockey/basketball/concerts.
Subby is paranoid...you don't walk into a gun show here without a large, highly visible, cable-lock, or heavy zip tie threaded through the well & barrel of any weapon you bring in....unless you want a very unpleasant introduction to those extra large, well armed, corn-fed cowboys that are providing security.

/That gun show you have in your town, down at the VFW, or kiwanas club....that's real cute.

Kanemano: if you can't stop drinking alcohol for the 2 or so hours it takes you to browse thru a gun show, you have other problems

Why? If you can't stop drinking for 2 hours to X, you have other problems? Where X is 'dance', 'attend a sporting event', 'have fun on a saturday night', 'play D&D' or 'do yard work'?  It's an event typically crammed wall to wall with people of varying degree of crazy. People who don't normally drink might like a couple beers just to chill and hang out.

ArkAngel: In addition, you can't buy a gun and leave with it and all must be disabled, likely with a removed firing pin

In Texas? You most certainly can buy a gun, cash, on the spot. They help you fill in your paperwork and call the government agencies, same as they would in a shop. There's an entire section of the floor ringed off for people doing paperwork and waiting on phone calls.

And I've never heard of them removing the firing pin.  I honestly don't remember them disabling the slides either, but that one could just be faulty memory because I've seen it done, just don't remember it being consistent. The non-disabled-slides may have had the firing pins removed I guess, I didn't ask, but most Texans buying guns at a gun show want to take it home, get drunk, and shoot at the coyote/blacks/family member of choice.

What amuses me at gun shows/shops is the entire staff wearing holstered guns. As though we live in a war-torn third world country where you may be called upon to shoot a lion or black person (I mean criminal) at any second.  Even knowing it's mostly just in-house advertising, it's funny to me.

Well said.

I've never been to a gun show, but I imagine it's like a car show, but with guns instead of cars.  Imagine if they passed a law saying no booze at car shows.

And if I could go for 2 hours without a drink, then I could go for 4 hours, and if I could do that I could go for 8 hours and pretty soon I'll be sober for the rest of my life.  Fark that.

Except those places where you buy, register, take home your gun are not asking to sell beer, nor would they be allowed.

The proposal states that shows WANTING to sell beer will have to follow certain rules.

No live ammo on site, guns disarmed to the point where they cannot be quickly armed/loaded and sold guns cannot be delivered on site.

Couple of thoughts to that:

1) people can be drunk and high even where alcohol is not served. The biggest kegger I ever attended was in a dry county.
2) gun shows are very safety conscious, as are most all people who deal with guns for a living. Weapons are typically disabled and locked. live ammo is not allowed.

Here in FL you can buy a fully functioning gun from a vendor and walk out with it if it is a rifle or shotgun. You still have to wait 3 days for a pistol (unless you buy it from a private seller who brought it to the show in which case no wait or background check). The gun just has to have a wire lock or similar it and its supposed to stay unloaded. You can also bring your own gun in to sell under the same conditions.
