Endive Wombat: I personally do not see the need for all local news stations, all major dedicated news stations, and CSPAN to broadcast all major Presidential Addresses.

Yeah, in an age where we have 4 24-hour news networks, I don't think it matters much if the broadcast channels air this stuff.

2014-08-08 01:35:42 PM

nocturnal001: Many of you are missing the point. Ideally we want to "force" as many people as possible to watch the damn thing. Networks used to think it was a patriotic duty to get more eyeballs on what our top leader is saying.

I guess the "Ow my balls" marathon is just too attractive these days.

StrikitRich: First line in the article:  With short notice to the TV networks,....

Guess the President was in too much of a hurry to get to Martha's Vineyard to give longer notice?

MMm, you missed out on some obvious additions there. No mention of Michelle Obama's obsession or fancy lettuce?

This...

There's only a few things that I can think of that is important enough to have on every channel.  Most of it is political blah talk.

"We're going to war with x"
"War with x is over"
"Federally mandated nap hour is effective immediately for all jobs"

/those are just three things off the top of my head that would be worth it

This is just what the politicians have been hoping for for years now.  "I was thinking about starting a war but hesitated because I thought y'all might think it's a bad idea.  Then I noticed everyone's too busy watching reality stars sleep with each other and call each other biatches and hos, so I figured, hey, why the hell not?"

In all honestly, people who get their "news" from CBS and Fox aren't going to believe a word Obama says anyway.  Besides both networks will cut the speech up into numerous out of context blurbs so that they can stoke the outrage of their viewers in due course about a bunch of non-issues that come up.

Yeah. I mean people will have no way to hear him speak other than watching NBC, ABC, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, CSPAN, NPR, multiple news radio stations in every city...

And, sadly, this is all that matters to some people.

Football IS more important.  We will get the important parts later on the news.  Presidential speeches aren't often time sensitive.  That is one of the great things about the president's weekly video address.  It is pre recorded and happens the same time each Sunday.  I can make a point to watch it live or record it for later.  It is usually just a repeat of things he mentioned earlier in the week though.

but the whitehouse really really needs to bring in a better video editor or director.  Isn't he friends with Spielberg or someone?  Get a little pro-bono work here or something.  They generally run with a fairly wide chest up shot, but once in a while they jump-cut to a close up on his face with no transition at all.  You are sitting there listening to a calm explanation of events at the border, or a recent development in Gaza and

BAM GIANT OBAMA ALL UP IN YOUR FACE!!!

Then we are back to regular presidential proportions.  they do it two or three times per address for emphasis.  Sometimes I zone out on what he is saying trying to predict the giant Obama attack. Maybe they could bring in a film school grad student?

Endive Wombat: I personally do not see the need for all local news stations, all major dedicated news stations, and CSPAN to broadcast all major Presidential Addresses.

Isn't this the reason we give them free air time though? Under the stipulation that they are providing a public service?

Yeah, it's like when FDR was all in a hurry to announce that thing in Hawaii on the radio. He should have scheduled it properly and done it a week or two later. Maybe after Christmas, when no one had anything better to do.

Kind of wish that the Whitehouse Press Secretary now bans their reporters from briefings.

"Don't feel like carrying the president's address?   Then we won't burden you with any news from The White House.  Go pay Reuters."

I believe President Obama was over one hour late getting to the podium. Or ten minutes late in CPT.

Watched it and listen to planted reporters talking points, Corporate Taxation,
thought it was a dress rehearsal.

No question about ISIS or the plight Christians just the usual," is it tough being so awesome Mr.President."

Oh please, going to war isn't even important any more and it hasn't been in decades. The president gives the order and the military blows up whichever country takes them the longest to find on a map.

That did happen a while back in his first term....and the guy they allowed to ask the first question was from the Huffington Post and his question was about what kind of dog the Obamas were going to pick.

The Why Not Guy: I don't see this as a big deal, though it would be a nice patriotic gesture if stations NOT carrying the address let people know about it so they could change the channel if they wish.

Or if those stations not carrying the address would simply relinquish their broadcast licenses for use of the public airwaves, because broadcasting presidential addresses was PART OF THE F#CKING DEAL FROM THE BEGINNING.

It MIGHT be news if it was somewhere beside Iraq. For something like this, a tweet would have sufficed.

Henry Holland: StrikitRich: Guess the President was in too much of a hurry to get to Martha's Vineyard to give longer notice?

Sure, because no president before the one with dark skin ever took time off to lounge around. Oh, wait....

[www.crawford-texas.org image 300x263]

From a year ago:

Tweets by Knoller himself back that up. On the eve of Obama's departure for Martha's Vineyard, Knoller tweeted that "since taking office, Pres Obama has taken 14 vacation trips spanning all or part of 92 days." Knoller also tweeted that "at the same point in office, Pres. GWBush had made 50 visits to this Texas Ranch totaling all or part of 323 days."

People like you need some new material cuz that shiat is tired.

/Not an Obama fan at all
//Sorry about bringing politics in to the sports tab
///OK, not really

Henry didn't say anything about other presidents taking vacations, so I really can't figure out why you went with this.

How is it that networks renting public airspace & bandwidth are even given the friggin' choice?

2014-08-08 09:24:27 PM
I'm in my 40s, but anybody else remember in the pre-cable days when a network would throw up the "Special Report" banner ... everybody in my house stopped what they were doing because sheet was about to get real.  Used to be a time they only did that when the fan had been hit.

Your average viewer of football and Big Brother wouldn't give a rats ass what Obama has to say anyway.

The average NFL player is paid 1.9 million a year.  The average American with a bachelor's degree will make 2.1 million in their lifetime.  So, yes.  It is almost exactly the same thing.

dennysgod: Your average viewer of football and Big Brother wouldn't give a rats ass what Obama has to say anyway.

The football viewer demographic doesn't seem like it would skew significantly toward any political ideology. I don't know what the Big Brother demographic might be like.

Riothamus: This is idiotic. Broadcast stations should have to perform some public functions in order to maintain their licenses from the FCC.

I agree.  But we would be idiots if we allowed airing a presidential address to be it.  It is about the cheapest option we could give them and it is also utterly unnecessary.      Make them make original local programing.  And while airing some preacher (local only and completely without remuneration) on Sunday might be part of it, it should only be a small part of it.

But lets face it, there are a zillion places now that you can see the president speaking live.  We no longer live in the world with only a handful networks.   And in addition to the live feeds, one can also now easily watch the address afterwards if one wishes to and/or read a transcript.

Tough. It shouldn't be "opt-in." I don't care if you can go and look it up, if you're interested, on the web - a live address from the President should have some degree of import, and so should take precedence over whatever other grotty, profit-driven programming is currently being aired.

Otherwise, you're just equating the federal government to just another programming option, and who's going to watch the President drone on about the real world when they can tune into "Ow! My Balls! Live!" or "Super Duper Handegg Bowl Preliminary Practice Palooza"?
