North Korea has tourists? Why?

My favorite is this hotel:

Because what guest doesn't love lots of stair climbing to enter and leave the hotel...unless you get a ride on the A shaped helicopter that is.

I would pay top dollar to stay at that place if it and it's scenery existed.  Stairs are fine, for that place to be worth building the last road/car park better be about 10 miles down the way anyway.

Architects serve very useful functions. I certainly don't want to do lighting, energy and egress for every single project.

it's impossible. an absolute power will always direct all its: food, money. power and military to remaining in power.

Architects make it pretty, but CivEs make it stand up.

Honestly, though, their ideas might be different, but the'yre really no more or less out there than some of the conceptual stuff you'd see in a student exhibition at any of our architectural schools.  I've seen buildings in Toronto, of all places, that are infinitely weirder than those.

At least they aren't trying to "express" themselves with every single building. Used to, cities had a strong architectural coherence. Now, so many places are just random collections of buildings with no relationship to each other because it was some artist's "vision."

In the 'capitalist pig' world we haven't done illustrations in that style since the 1960's, but the ideas behind the illustrations are like you said, pretty run-of-the-mill student quality.

Yeah, count me as one of the people who likes the idea for that one. Personally, if I'm going to walk 10 miles to it, I'm not going to sleep in a hotel with other people around, but we can work out the details later.

Slaxl: I think they look great. Why can't NK get it's shiat together? How hard is it to use absolute power to create a functioning state?

Well, there's political power and then electrical power, which they don't have. Best Korea was dependent on cheap fuel from the Soviets during the Cold War and once the USSR fell they didn't continue giving Best Korea the Communist Club discount. No power, no irrigation, no food, etc. They've turned to burning wood to fuel trucks.

Uchiha_Cycliste: i mean, for f*cks sake all north korea had to do was decommission half it's military and never start up a nuclear program and it probably *would have* been a wealthy, happy, communist paradise where the people sing and eat and give joy to leader. but no. they had to go pissoff everyone instead- waste all their money too.

True but then I think part of the way they stay in power (or at least keep people in line) is the creation of the American boogeyman that's going to invade any second now, so they need all of those shiatty expensive rockets to launch into the sea to show they're ready to take us on. Or something like that.

It's been said NK is stuck in 1950. It shouldn't surprise us their imaginations are also. This looks just like American vision's of the future in the 1950s .

it's impossible. an absolute power will always direct all its: food, money. power and military to remaining in power.

The Soviets managed it for quite a while until their economy tanked. Not that the Soviet system was particularly efficient, but it was more functional than NK.

Best Korea existed pretty much on the good graces of other communist countries. Insanely xenophobic, obsessed with military strength, and utterly failing to devote adequate resources to building up its infrastructure because it was able to rely on cheap energy and resources from its allies. With the Soviets gone and China seeing the Kim dynasty as a liability these days, they're completely over a barrel because they don't have the infrastructure to support themselves--and the state has run itself into a trap of needing what little resources it has to produce this Potemkin society that builds giant (empty) hotels and threatens nuclear war while the people starve to death. The entire thing is predicated on maintaining the illusion of progress. If they gave up the façade, the state would collapse under its own weight and everyone at the top would probably be devoured by starving peasants.

Which, of course, is going to happen sooner or later.

Best Princess Celestia: Like every other architect in the world: no grounding in the real world where this stuff is supposed to be built.

Kinda depends on the school they are trained at. My school was Very construction based. We were doing construction drawings semesters before our first design class. Other schools, not so much. All theory, no real world construction until the masters.

I love the look of the medium. Reminds me of old worlds fair images. Would have loved to turn in projects with that style presentation.

As for the building, I think they lack integration with the environment. Reminds me of placing buildings in SimCity.

Architects aren't nearly as sociopathic as civil engineers.

No architect I know would design a cloverleaf interchange without an associated approach lane, drop it in a state that gets snow and ice half the year, and designate it as the primary access way to a major public university.

I was about to say, clearly they're lying, this guy has seen the Jetsons every "welcome to the future" book from 1960s America.

But on second thought Soviet futurism looked a lot like American in the 60s and the Soviet Union pretty much created North Korea.
