At this point I think they could randomly pick patterns on a per soldier basis and have more success.

My suggestion:

That's a lot of money. Not to mention what was spent on Junior's car.

I'm afraid that a decade plus of all-you-can-spend GWOT funding has caused the services to lose their money management skills.

Digital camo always sucked as a video game unlock.

I don't know why they didn't ask some random CoD player.

the Universal Camouflage Pattern, a digital pattern that made quite a splash with its distinctive pixelated look.
Unfortunately, it was also terrible. Really, really terrible. Just totally ineffective and, it turned out, completely untested.

I remember the propaganda back then telling me it was proven to be better than anything ever. Designed on com-pew-tars, they said, that proved they were good, see.

The actual patter doesn't even matter once you get about 50 meters out, then it all blends into one color, hopefully one that doesn't stick out.

Why do we even NEED camouflage anymore unless it's special ops?

90% of the time, they're not even fighting and when they are fighting it's usually like this:

I've never been able to figure out, what is this shiat? Is this to make man overboard even harder to deal with or what exactly is the point? Better stealth when you levitate and fly above enemy ships but only at night?

waterboarding is still fairly cheap.  A rag a bucket and some water only runs the army something like 1.25 million.

FTA: "That may have been thanks to the new 2014 Defense Authorization Act, which requires the Armed Forces to choose a single pattern to work across all of the services."

Has there EVER been a "cost-saving" standardization program at the Pentagon that didn't go way over budget and end in tears?

It isn't camouflage in the sense of "you don't see me", but in the sense of "you don't resolve a human-shaped target to favorited! bullets into".  Basically, you are just trying to futz with his pattern-recognition long enough to favorited! him.    And that is just as useful for a foot soldier as an elite sneaky bastard.

That is exactly the problem with the digital camo. The patterns they selected are too small, so from a distance it all looks one color, so it doesn't break up the outline of the human body. Not only was it a boondoggle, it's hard to say how many troops caught a bullet and either died or are disabled because they did a shiat job of designing the camo.

I'm saying that the pattern doesn't matter beyond about 50 meters, for any camouflage pattern that exists. The human eye can't see the pattern from that far so it turns into a blob that is an average of the colors used. Besides, no matter what pattern you pick, hiding the human form is extremely difficult because our brains pick out the shape very easily. Our brains are excellent at pattern-matching, often to a fault.

If this is true why don't they camo the ballistic vests as well?  It seems counterproductive to have this outline fuzzing pattern, with a big black vest over the torso.  Kind of makes a critical area a big ol target.

I really gotta wonder how many uniforms 5 billion buys, too.
