As someone who works on an animated show that has been running long enough to experience significant drift from original designs to present, I think there are a couple of factors at play. One, with dozens of people working on any given episode, quirks of a creator's style are bound to get homogenized and "corrected" -- for instance, I've worked on a couple of shows where eyes are slightly askew in the turnaround, but gradually straighten out over a few seasons. Two, I think as time goes on, most shows drift seem to drift toward a preference for structural soundness (IE, characters are constructed of shapes that are easy to manipulate in the animator's mind) over stylistic quirks that hinder how an artist can indicate volume.

/Just my theory, anyway.

I first saw that a few years back when an oil pipeline here broke and polluted a stream and a lake at a park. You were able to really see the before/after effect. Its really cool, I don't know why we don't see it more.

You might want to look two posts up....

I think it's interesting how minor some of those are. They're subtle, yet effective. IMHO, The Simpsons look better now than in the beginning of the series(Most definitely better than the Tracy Ullman version above). The image quality is much better, the colors and stuff in all of those are markedly improved for sure...

Counterpoint: boards and design are still done stateside, so we're still the ones who set the canon on how stuff looks.

/Boards, though, have gotten enormously time-consuming and complex, to the point where they look like black and white animation.
//... Because we have to be so so SO clear for the overseas animators.

For the record, the ranking of animated longevity in the US (by episodes) goes as follows:

1st- The Simpsons (552)
DQ- The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show (387, they repackaged old shorts)
2nd- King of the Hill (259)
3rd- South Park (247)
4th- Family Guy (231)
5th- Arthur (205)
6th- Beavis and Butthead (200)
7th- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (193)
8th- Spongebob Squarepants (188)
T9th- Rugrats (172)
T9th- American Dad! (172)

This is the US list. The Simpsons would only place 21st on the Japanese list.

Maybe the Gargantua 2 special will give him one. Maybe someone wastes JJ on Guild orders and suddenly he feels the need to avenge the brother he never liked anyway? It's gotta be something if he's got either Brock or Hatred (large companion) going along with it.

I don't know. Comic strip characters evolve to, but as far as I know there is only one artist and no animation.
