Yeah all that wonderful weather is horrible. And actually having a property value is just so trying.

And here we are - a citizen can't defend their own home from a raving inebriate.  I'm not saying what he did was right, but I'd support his decision to do it.  If someone was ceaselessly banging at my doors and windows in the dead of night, Detroit or bumfark Kansas, I'd certainly have a gun with me when I went to check the door.  And if that person came charging up my steps at me when I opened the door, you better believe lead is gonna fly.

'She was a beautiful lady, you know. She had things going for her.'Simmons said.

As do most 19 year-olds who get trashed and wreck their cars, then go banging on random doors.

And another story quoted her folks as saying "all he had to do was dial 911."  You know what else - she coulda flagged down a police officer, stopped into a gas station, something other than trying to beat down this guys door after she wrecked her car. I can't believe they'd pin this on him.

Good to know the citizens of Michigan don't approve of shooting first and asking questions never.

There's a difference between having a gun with you when you check the door and opening the door (which is made out of steel, so there was no real way she was getting in) and shooting out of the door without checking the situation.

Then don't open the damn door.  The shooter was behind a locked door and was perfectly safe where he was.  You can't claim self-defense when you needlessly put yourself in harm's way.

Yep.  His first version of the story was "I didn't know it was loaded" in his statement to the cops at the time.  He changed it during the trial.  That doesn't endear you to jurors.

UrinalPooper: So you can safely home-invade in Michigan now. Check.

Tell me about the part where she "invaded" anything.  She was making a racket, but outside the house.  If she'd knocked down the door and come in, then it would be a whole different case.  But he  unlocked and opened his doorand shot her  outside his house.  Those details really weaken the "home invasion" argument.

both sides of this story deserve exactly what's happened to them based on their actions.

Today's hatred of all other humans is not a result of this shooting, but of the people in here who I'm pretty sure are not trolling, but are saying that you get to shoot someone for being loud and drunk (and having recently hit her head), because it's so very, very scary.

Hey gun advocates: if you want us all to think you're tough cookies (not to mention "responsible"), stop using your continual, girly, unreasonable, and usually bigoted fear as your defense.

She shouldn't have been drunk/stoned and banging on doors. He should have been more in control and not blasted away all willy nilly with his shotgun at the little lady who made some noise. I can kinda see 2nd degree murder, but a manslaughter charge sounds more right to me. I know the mom wants life for the guy: but he shouldn't get more than single digits.

I'm about as pro-second amendment and Castle doctrine as you get, but when someone is outside your home you don't shoot first. You call the cops first and sit there with your gun loaded waiting in case they break in, You yell at them to leave. Don't open the door. Firing is a last resort.

We had a man with down syndrome walk into a stranger lady's house with a knife last year where I live. They calmly subdued him and took him home, No one shot anyone, and we ALL had the guns to do so. Be responsible for farks sake.

"Wafer shot 19-year-old McBride through a locked screen door "

This seems to be the relevant bit.

Shoot a drunk stranger in your living room: self-defense.

Shoot a drunk stranger through your locked front door: murder.

I'm fine with that.

This could of ended even in more tragedy if this drunk teenager would of hit and killed someone. As much as I feel she should take some blame for drinking and driving there is no excuse to shoot someone through a locked door. Ultimately justice was served. My only question was why didn't she call on her cell phone for the police or her family.

My first instinct would not to go grab my firearm, but to call 911. Yes, I would very likely get an adrenaline rush from it.

Mmmm, adrenaline rush....

This isn't over. He has a lot of grounds for appeal, with the biggest error being not declaring a mistrial when the prosecutor swept the jury with the murder weapon.

Following the case, the defense brought forth much better qualified witnesses who showed that the screen was busted inward before the shot was fired.

Add to that the jury instruction that a home includes the porch, and I see some possibility this was self defense.

I have no idea what happened that night, but I am shocked that the jury had no reasonable doubt against self defense.
