It is Texas, so no one would notice any difference in birth defects.

"Maybe even have a Walmart," Mr. Jones mused.

About midway between El Paso and Midland-Odessa, Loving County, population 95, according to the Census Bureau, is spread across 650 square miles

Sure. Y'all want a new mall, too?

There are like 10 people in that whole county. Might end up with the occasional mutant javelina and glow in the dark illegal immigrant but otherwise I doubt it would affect much.

Lol. Unfortunatley, population centers sprout up in the strangest areas and EPA Superfund sites are often in places that used to be far away from the city.

It's got to go somewhere, might as well give it to someone who wants it.

/I do worry a little about Texas's lax regs.

This is a win win. The conservatives get what they want--money, and the liberals can chuckle at the "idiot" conservatives for storing nuke waste in their backyard, what with all the RADIATION and such.

They might be on to something with this....

Put radioactive waste along the border.

It won't stop illegal immigration, but it will make it easier to manage.

From TFA- "With the money that this would generate for the county, we might even be able to pay the taxpayers back," said the county judge, Skeet Jones.

I'm doubtful.

Population 95

Access a waste disposal tax of $10,000,000 a year

That would be $105,000 a year per resident and a 10Million Dollar tax would be dirt cheap

I'm just worried that they'd start stacking stuff up and nobody would do any site inspections, and before you know you've got a mushroom cloud over West Texas.

Hmmm, I've heard that phrase before.

Snark aside, that's a damn good point. We have proof that we shouldn't trust Texas with fertilizer...why the fark should we trust them with radioactive waste?

2014-08-07 05:45:33 PM
A better place for a mass radioactive storage would be right on top of the Edwards Aquifer. A leak would do the world a lot of good there.

2014-08-07 05:46:44 PM
Radiation. No one can possibly understand its mysteries... it's secrets... It's so deadly, just thinking about it could kill you.

Stand in front of a mirror and say, "Radiation" three times, and within seven days you're dead and inside a lead-lined coffin. Or maybe, you'll go super-critical and kill everyone you love.

/This is what some anti-nuclear activists (should/)actually believe.

Sounds like there's lots of money involved. Should be simple enough to regulate and inspect it frequently.

2014-08-07 05:48:03 PM
Just cover the whole state in a giant concrete sarcophagus, fill it with nuclear waste and be done with it already.

/or at least Houston.

2014-08-07 05:49:20 PM
Huh, after actually reading this it doesn't sound as dumb as I expected.  If it's going to be a few miles away in NM anyway, may as well get the money and have control over it, plus I like the reprocessing idea and they seem to have some good financial incentives for the gubmint to take care of it within 20 years.  And they may get a walmart, which is everyone's dream.

Way too smart for west west Texas.

Y'all idjits is missing the point.

They've already got a facility built about an hour away, also in a desolate area of West Texas. The super high tech storage facility consists of a big fark-off pit they dug. Lined with cement.

There's NO infrastructure out there to deal with anything that goes wrong. Need to get inspectors in there? Good luck landing at a four-terminal airport in Midland and driving out there. Except it's about equidistant from El Paso, so you could land the plane there and drive. What about emergency workers? Oh what, there's only one road going in there? I guess they can all stay in one of the many settleme... oh shiat, it's desolate as fark there? No people around?

But hey, maybe if no one is around, we can just dump it wherever and damn any contingency plans. What's it gonna do, leak into an aquifer or something?

well we do need to put it somewhere...personally i would vote for seismicly stable place offshore, but that's just me.

Hmmmm....
Maybe, with all that sweet, sweet nuclear waste money flowing into the county, some smart developer should start Galt-opia there.  You know, Texas, hating interference from those goombahs in Washington, can't be having with all those regulations that strangle business, rugged, manly individualists withholding their precious labor from the rest of us....
