They should also be given driver's licenses and full driving privileges.

The NRA isn't interested in gun rights any more. They're only interested in gun sales. They've become industry shills.

A report issued in 2008 said that New York City policeman hit their target "roughly 34 percent of the time," which is a great batting average for a baseball player, but not so much for lethal lead slugs flying willy-nilly about, looking for a place to rest.

Sounds like the best use of a gun grabber's time wouldn't be whining about what some douchewater fail out says on "NRA TV" or whatever the fark that is but to spend all political capital and fundraising to disarm the police.

Actually, the NRA welcomes gays.  In fact, they've got a new openly gay commentator:

Right.

http://www.npr.org/2013/03/15/174383213/how-close-are-the-nra-and-gu nm akers-really

Paul Barrett of Bloomberg Businessweek has been talking with gun makers.

What is it you think has been overlooked about the - whatever you want to call it - the gun lobby, the gun industry, gun rights advocates, what did you discover?

PAUL BARRETT: It's becoming almost conventional wisdom that the reason the NRA goes to such extremes is that it is driven by the gun industry. And in fact, that understanding is just incorrect. If anything, it is the NRA that sets the terms of the debate and the gun industry basically obediently follows along.

If it's not a formal law of logic, it has no bearing on the validity or invalidity of an argument. And yet, when someone says x, y, z, small penis, you invoke Butthurt Blogger's Law and say their argument is invalid.

You can say whatever you want, but I go by how you use it, not how you describe it.

So I didn't even get *HALF WAY* through the article until I had to stop, because I can only take so many undisguised puerile insults dressed up in half-literate writing.   It's actually the opposite of an intellectual argument for something.

Heck, it's that kind of writing that *HELPS* the NRA, because they can point to it and say "See, these people hate you and all that you stand for".

Now, if you want to have a serious discussion on the rights of the legally blind or visually impaired to defend themselves, and the potential issues they might face both practical and legal, I'm all for it.  But this?  Utter crap that isn't even up to Fark Politics tab standards.

Ok, gun people.  Are we there yet?  We saw you defend them for speaking out against basic background checks, we saw you defend them for demanding guns be allowed in schools, we saw you defend the NRA for advocating gun rights for violent felons.  What about guns for people who cannot see?  Should the blind be allowed to carry guns with no hope of ever being able to identify what exactly it is that they're shooting at?

If so, would you advocate for driving privileges for the blind as well, or no?

And before you ask, I oppose Godwin's Law for the same reason.

Now, see, *THIS* is something we can discuss.

The reason why Godwin's Law is popular is because resorting to a Hitler or Nazi reference in an argument is an intellectual crutch.  Nazis are bad, mmkay, so if X is associated with Nazis, then X must be bad.  It's a lazy argument that is overused.

Which is what the whole "Gun owners must be compensating for something" argument is.  Small penises are something to be made fun of, so if we can associate a group we disagree with we can "other" them while feeling superior.  It's the gun control version of third grade boys saying girls have cooties.

But I'm going to turn it around for you:  Can you point to any research showing that gun ownership is related to penis size?   I'm not aware of any, and I almost certainly would be aware of it:  I've been arguing for gun rights online since the mid-1990's, and I actually read law reviews and medical research both pro and con on the subject.

The only reference I'm aware of that has any intellectual weight is a vague reference to guns representing penises in dreams (along with knives, umbrellas, etc.) by Sigmund Freud.  But Freud saw penises in practically *EVERYTHING* that was longer than it was wide, so that's not really surprising.

But if you have a serious source for the idea that isn't merely repeating a worn-out pejorative, I'd like to read it.

2014-08-07 04:54:36 PM
Nothing could go wrong with this idea, and this thread will stay on point about the pros and cons of the blind carrying guns and not turn into a flame war between gun grabbers and gun nuts.
