Funny how things change over time. Today, if he had brought a dildo to class, announced he was gay and shoved it up a friend's arse, he would have been given a trophy.

The child was initially given three days suspension, which was reduced to three days in-school suspension, McDonald said.

In-school suspension?  WTF?

"He told me he didn't know they would think it was a weapon or he wouldn't have brought it to school," McDonald said

It's not weapon, but schools freak out at the sight of a pointed finger these days.  Zero tolerance extends to rational thought too, apparently.

It's to keep the kid from basically getting 3 days off.  In-school means they sit in the library or someplace and can't do anything fun or productive.  It's also to not impact parents who can't easily take time off of work to babysit a kid.

I had a few in that series. They used a plastic strip of caps which ejected "casings" out the top, right? They had a cool looking M-16 if I recall.

Those were the days...

How are school officials constantly getting away with this nonsense without getting fired?

Suspending a 10 year old for a NERF gun he brought for show and tell. That should be an instant firing.

Was that the one that used small red plastic caps that were attached in a row of 12 or so? Basically it was a red plastic strip that you inserted into the magazine.

A nerf gun is not a weapon. A weapon is something that is designed to inflict harm on another person or persons. A nerf gun is not designed to inflict harm, thus it is not a weapon.

While the father should have been a bit more involved here, it's not surprising that a 4th grader's logic is more coherent than the school (or district's). I understand the whole weapon thing and they are somewhat bound by idiotic lawsuits and overly helicoptery parents, but a nerf gun or water gun have never been and never will be a weapon. They are a toy. If they are brought to school without permission, they are something held onto in order to avoid class distractions, not for anyone's safety.

This is ridiculous.

2014-08-07 02:17:03 PM
The teachers, staff, principal, school board and district superintendant should all be lined up and shot with the NERF bullets until it knocks the stupid out of them...

This is not a toy shaped like a gun.  This is not a bit of plastic that can't kill you.
img.fark.net
It is a weapon!  A gun with only one purpose, to kill!

Would be funny if the Dad threatened to sue the school over 2nd Amendment violations just to get the district to admit it's not a weapon.

In high school I brought a 20 gauge pump shotgun for a how to speech. Kept it in locker all day, gave speech, no problem. I had another class with section on gun safety, everyone brought in guns. Circa 1977.

Yup, my brother had the M16 and I had the Tommy gun. We also had a few of the pistols. We were shooting caps at our dog once and the neighbors called the cops saying we were shooting BBs at him. The cops showed up and wanted to check the guns to make sure they were really cap guns. One cop asked my dad where he bought it and said he was going to get one for his kids. These days there would be a tri-county SWAT task force locking down the neighborhood.

/wish I still had the Tommy gun

Somaticasual: Have we really gone completely down the PC drain in that time period?

Yes, but this isn't about being PC, it's about the removal of anything resembling thought or intelligence from school discipline and/or administration.  A brightly colored farking nerf gun is not the same as a real gun.  Not even close.  Same with pop-tarts, fingers, a Woody doll's pistol, or a quarter-sized solid casting of a gun attached to a keychain.  None of them should be treated as a gun.

What a stupid reaction, especially for Warner Robins.  The usual custom there would be to declare this child a hero, salute the flag and parade him around the village square, if there was such a thing, in a 4x4 mud bogger.  When did Warner Robins turn into little Carmel By The Sea?

I had a one-day suspension in 8th grade for fighting.  (Asshole has trashed my locker.)

Fortunately, it was an at-home suspension....ran some errands with my Mom, then we met up with my Dad after he got off work.....dinner and a movie.

/IIRC, the movie was "Aladdin".
