No, they Grateful Dead were never punk rock, just because this jackoff is pissed off he wasn't loved by the popular kids who probably didn't really like that godawful band, anyway, but heard it was cool to do so.  Go listen to the Grateful Dead and never go to another real punk show again, we don't want your types in our scene, anyway. (That's how we end up with rapists and shiatbag fratboys/frat girls ruining things, anyway. Gateway drugs, man.)

If punk rock was music made without corporate/commercial influence, then the best punk album of all time would be Boston's first album. Recorded and mixed almost entirely in Tom Scholz' basement...

He's the old hippie that made us sick, He wrote muzak for drug addicts
He's the fat geezer who talked too much, He used drugs as a crutch
He ate granola and he hugged trees, Looked like a dog bit by fleas
Had a beer belly and a tye-dyed shirt, Said he'd live forever but now he sleeps in dirt

Jerry was a piece of shiat, shiat, shiat, shiat, shiat
I'm Grateful that he's dead, dead, dead, dead, dead

Subarus can be pretty punk. Hardscrabble cars with a DIY ethos that last forever are cheap and usually big enough to haul shiat around in?? I knew lots of punks with beat-up old Subarus.

well, there was that one time that the Grateful Dead did a cover of the Dead Kennedy's - Nazi Punks fark Off... but yeah that is about as "punk" as they ever got (and it isn't really punk as they just overlaid the lyrics from DK to the Iko Iko song)

That's pretty punk rock.

What the fark is it about punk that fans make them fight about what is and what isn't punk? Does this happen in other music? Are there classical fans arguing about Bach? Do gospel fans argue about Elvis?

Back in '99 I went to the Cleveland Punk Fest. I watched an argument between two guys claiming to be more punk than the other. "Fark you, asshole. I'm more punk than you'll ever be. I ran away at 15 and have been homeless ever since!"

There's a lot of pride in failure at life with that crowd.

I once met this insufferable twat (rhymes with "bat") who was so up his own ass about music... god it was terrible.

I had him convinced that Good Charlotte was the best punk band in the world though, that was fun.

As someone who grew up in new Orleans in 80s we listened to everything and did not judge. I equally wore out a few Dead cassettes as well as Black Flag and the Dead Kennedys who I both saw at the local VFw.

Noodling around on your guitars for twenty minutes is about as opposite of punk rock as I can imagine.

2014-08-07 04:28:29 PM
Also, Grateful Dead were hippies, obvs., which meant blissed-out, outdoorsy, come as you are.  Punk was tense, urban/(suburban), indoors, suspicious.  Hippies could tune out of society and tool around in their banger vans, but punks were trapped in their lives, often with shiatty-ass jobs working for shiatty-ass people.

Not saying they're diametrically opposed, but there's a reason Jello made fun of Governor Moonbeam with "California Ueber Alles".

2014-08-07 04:28:31 PM
I grew up listening to the dead, my parents were deadheads and prior to my birth had spent some time following them around.

Once I was born my parents went to fewer shows, but they did take my sister and I to a few - I remember a few of them but I couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 at the last one we saw.  I was to young to know if they could still play back then (88-91), but I do vividly remember a topless girl with a spectacular pair of tits swaying around for about 3 hours though.  It was a fun atmosphere and even as a little kid I enjoyed it.

Speaking of circle jerks, anyone check out the comment section on that article?  As if anyone knowing anything about being punk would string together a 5 paragraph reasoning...  rather than just smash the computer...

Some wanker:  "punk is more of a movement than a style of music"
Some tosser:  "I disagree, punk is more of a definitive musical genre"
punk: "piss off"

2014-08-07 04:30:17 PM
Grateful Dead are "Post-Rock" which supposedly means that all the instruments are used but none of the vocals"
