Or were you under the mistaken impression that there aren't any Germans who would have liked to have buried their WWII dead under a Nazi flag?

It is about heritage.  A heritage of slavery.  It's also about states rights.  A state's right to allow slavery.

To be fair, there are likely quite a few - either through sheer ignorance or being victims of revisionist history lessons - who really do think that they are simply supporting the idea that the Federal Government overstepped its bounds and that it shouldn't be allowed to happen again. You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new South.

Yeah, it is explicitly very illegal to use or display Nazi symbols or propaganda in a celebratory way in Germany as far as I remember.  The protections of our First Amendment are quite foreign to some countries.  Even Canada has human rights tribunals that put governmental force behind what would be social/economic limitations on free speech here.

Of course, the United States can't ban the Rebel banner outright, as German law prohibits the display of swastikas. The First Amendment protects freedom of speech.

The answer is right there in TFA, subs.

Yes, I wince when I see the stars 'n bars because most often those displaying it are suffering from intellectual defficiencies, but it was an actual battle banner that soldiers marched under. I'd liken it more to the Wermacht version of the Iron Cross used as the insignia of the German army in WWII.

Seeing a Confederate flag always makes me wonder, "Do you think those kids in third world countries wearing 'New England Patriots 19-0 Super Bowl Champs' shirts know that the Patriots didn't actually win the Super Bowl that year? Or what football even is?"

The confederate flag to me in my youth meant the Dukes of Hazzard. Later on in my teens it meant Lynyrd Skynrd and rebelliousness. After college it meant racism and not being able to get over the fact that the south lost the fight to a bunch of northerners. The flag can mean many things.

They got their butts handed to them and their states trashed. Yeah the North had a slow start, but they picked a stupid fight they could never win. As a percent of population dead, the Civil War was the most deadly war the US participated in. What is there to be proud of?

Exactly, it was the battle flag that people marched under when they were killing U.S. soldiers and marines.

interestingly, parts (if not all) of Das Boot was filmed in Germany.  that's why you will see no nazi flags in a movie about nazis.  (also, may have been an artistic thing, you really don't want to ruin that movie with thoughts about nazism.  it's a boat movie.  with an ending that's just, ah man, really?)

Although it could be argued that some of the Wehrmacht flags had a long and distinguished history predating the third Reich, while the southern cross flag the confederates marched under was solely a product of the confederate states and all they stood for.

The orginal film "The Producers" was banned in Germany for a decade until the law changed that allowed nazi symbols in "Works of Art"

I'm a 12th generation Virginian. My direct patrilineal ancestor got here in 1691.

The idea that my heritage is defined by a half a decade in the middle of the 19th century is ludicrous.

Tou want to honor your Confederate ancestors Mr Fredricksburg, fly the flag of the Commonwealth. It's what Robert E. Lee would've done.

Then again, Free Speech provides for the burning of said flag, too.
