If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life,

I don't want to beg, steal or borrow.
I just want to live until I die.

low expectations = low disappointment

I think we knew this but the predictability aspect (described in TFA) is interesting.

Actually, the best way is not to lower expectations but to stop trying to be happy at all. Fark getting worked up about not being happy - enjoy the little times you can be happy - like when your shiatty boss gets beat up in a home invasion robbery, or that ex-girlfriend that broke your heart gets really, really fat. Times when that show-off in accounting gets fired for sexual harassment are just the beginning. There is no need to lower any expectations, ever.

It's amazing how much our society, at least in the US, is socially pushing everyone to "shut up and eat your gruel".

Formalized review-processes at major companies are geared primarily to reinforce the idea to the workers, "you're just a cog in a machine.  You're not special.  Don't expect too much".

All of this corporate, governmental, and social pressure, to keep the serfs from saying, "I'm mad as hell and I am not going to take it anymore".

Just accept your lot in life.

Done in one. Such a catchy tune, I liked it as a kid before I got good enough at language to understand what they were saying. Then I was horrified.

I think this is where socialists come in and say 'look, you aren't gonna be a bazillionaire, but if you all work together, you can all improve your lot in life' and then get promptly chased off because everyone in  Murica realizes they really are just temporarily out of money millionaires. It'll change soon and when it does, those poors better watch themselves.

Look at the whole wide world, and the quality of life of its inhabitants.  Do you aspire to live in the 50th percentile of that?

I do not.

I try to plan big and expect nothing. It seems to work out ok for me. I tend to have very low stress levels as long as nothing is literally on fire. (Or figuratively but in a way that would be just as bad as literally).

Now that's Fark service. Saw headline, came for this reference, andthere it was. Well done sir.

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So from my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

(repeat)

A pretty woman makes her husband look small
And very often causes his downfall
As soon as he marries her then she starts
To do the things that will break his heart

But if you make an ugly woman your wife
you'll be happy for the rest of your life
An ugly woman cooks meals on time
And she'll always give you peace of mind

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So from my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

Sax solo

Don't let your friends say you have no taste
Go ahead and marry anyway
Though her face is ugly, her eyes don't match
Take it from me, she's a better catch

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So from my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

Spoken:
Say man!
Hey baby!
I saw your wife the other day!
Yeah?
Yeah, an' she's ug-leeee!
Yeah, she's ugly, but she sure can cook, baby!
Yeah, alright!

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So from my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you
 (repeat)

He'd tell the kids, "I advise you to get a career, what can I say?"

He took me aside and said, "Tell me your dreams."

"I want to be an astronaut, discover new things."

He said, "Look, you're British, so scale it down a bit."

"All right, I want to work in a shoe shop, then. Discover shoes that no one's ever discovered in the back of the shop."

"Look, you're British,so scale it down a bit."

"All right, I want to work

in a sewer, then. And discover sewage no one's ever discovered and pile it on my head, surface and sell myself to an art gallery."

Ahh, no Freude like Schadenfreude.

I admit finding happiness in seeing those who have been complete dickheads to countless others face plant.  It's one of life's guilty pleasures.

As far as low expectations, I would need a backhoe to find mine and I'm still miserable so the article is bull$it.

Oh, and all people are indeed, scumbags.  I would preface that sentiment with "self serving".

I like being my own boss.  It's hard to get motivated at times, and not sit around and get stoned, but I get to work on many projects naked. As long as I don't get pubic hairs in my art projects, I'm fine.

Don't waste your time believing in a personal god. Realize that we're not as evolved as we think we are. Accept the fact that death is oblivion. Don't be somebody else's tool.  Follow these rules--and think for yourself because I commanded you to--and you'll do fine.

Right. Even if one is comfortable and warm and fat and clothed and has everything they pretty much need, seeing someone who is better off creates jealousy and therefore lowers happiness.

Money and fame are insatiable -- once you reach a level, you want to get more.  And getting more isn't necessarily in your control. You'll go though your life not being  content and always wanting.

Want the process not the result.

A lot of people are driven because of the desire for fame or money or to prove someone wrong. Finding they don't need these can lead them to just drift through life.
