Washington should just shorten it to the "Skins" and be done with it. Half the time that's how they're referred to anyway.

/other half is "damn Skins!"

The USPTO decision means $nyder can no longer enforce his marks, correct?

Instead of whining, how about doing something like guerilla sales of merch at every Skins game this season, for rock-bottom prices ($5 for a t-shirt)? The only thing that's gonna change Big Dan's mind is dollars anyway, so once he starts losing sales, he'll change the name quicker than he changes coaches.

They could play in Washington instead if Minnesota cannot provide a stadium.

They're not saying they won't play the game there if they don't change the name. But, the school also doesn't have to advertise and promote the game using the name.

They already signed the contract saying they would allow the NFL to use the stadium. I'm assuming that contract has explicit language in it about the NFL using their logos in the stadium. Basically, the university has already agreed to it and can't back out now without voiding the contract and presumably being forced to cough up a giant chunk of cash in compensation

I love that Washington has spent the whole offseason creating PR initiative after PR initiative with Snyder trying to grab anyone he possibly can to "defend" the name. You guys realize you're doing 10x the work of a re-brand and making yourselves look like assclowns, right?

Snyder realizes that literally no one waving the Redskins flag will give a flying f*ck if the name is changed within a year, right? That everyone is just upset about change and "damn libruhls" taking away their rights to be oppressive assholes, and that, much like people claim about Social Justice Warriors, people will only care about defending the name until something else happens.

I just think it's a stupid f*cking hill to die on. If enough people tomorrow started complaining about the Red Sox name, yeah, I might be like "wtf?" but I wouldn't changing their name either if shuts people up. I've been sports fan all my life and this "tradition" argument is just hot air.

It's only a farking name. You root for teams based mostly on geography, and/or certain emotional attachments. The actual name? Lol, nope.

From the article it sounds like the use of the stadium is contracted through the vikes, including payment.

It's sad to think that every Sunday for over three hours, native Americans are remorselessly oppressed by that team. not to mention the hundreds of times they are oppressed whenever the name appears in print.

Exactly. There is no down side to a name change. None. You get all kinds of great PR for doing so (or at least you would have, had you not been a complete moron about it and been pro-active from the start), and you sell a ton of new merch in the process. Anyone who biatches is going to stop the first time the team goes on a 4 game winning streak.

Chiefs have been meeting with some reps/tribes lately to discuss some of these issues...I really hope they don't try and start this "Well it's OK because we talked to these Native Americans and they say it's cool" crap. Just change it. Stop pretending that a name/mascot/color scheme means anything.

I read an article last year (Economist, I think) that said a name change would actually cost Snyder at least a little bit of money, and that's likely why he's refusing. He's required to share profits from most team merchandise with other NFL owners (except for Jerruh), unless the NFL makes an exception as a means to help him get over such hardship.

Some Scandinavians say that it mocks their heritage.  The Viking logo has the caricature of a pale-skinned Scandinavian with a Hulk Hogan mustache and yellow braided hair, wearing a helmet with horns sticking out of it, making him look like a barbarian or something.

They should keep the name and change their logo to a red potato. They could have a youth fan club called the Tater Tots! Their are loads of obvious concession tie ins they could use. It's a win win.

I looked up Viking in Wikipedia, and found this: "The image of wild-haired, dirty savages sometimes associated with the Vikings in popular culture is a distorted picture of reality.[2] Non-Scandinavian Christians are responsible for most surviving accounts of the Vikings, and consequently, a strong possibility for bias exists. This attitude is likely attributed to Christian misunderstandings regarding paganism."

Also:  "...sports kits such as those of the Minnesota Vikings and Canberra Raiders have perpetuated the myth of the horned helmet."

So it looks like the Minnesota Vikings mascot is actually perpetuating an anti-Scandinavian stereotype that was invented by bigots.
