One of the downsides of the internet is being exposed to the vast number of delusions out there.

"I do not believe Ebola exists because none of my family members has been affected by it,"

Flawless logic there, Hoss.

Perhaps sending them on a fact finding trip to West Africa is in order

I was gonna say, her reaction kinda reminded me of the tea party crowd the day after the 2012 elections.
"He couldn't have won legitimately, no one I know voted for him"

There's a fun thought experiment for Teabaggers: would you rather vote for Obama or have Ebola?

For anyone who doesn't believe ebola exists, there's a very easy way for them to prove it.

I think a simple swab of blood from an "ebola" victim inside the nares of each skeptic will probably solve our problem rather quickly.  They need to go straight into quarantine, of course.  Purely for scientific purposes.

The anti-conspiracy group I belong to is spreading false rumors about these mythical skeptics.

Don't tell anyone, it's a secret.

we don't hear enough from peter duesberg anymore.  i mean, even if you think he's a nut and the HIV doesn't cause AIDS hypothesis is total bunk, it is creepy how any dissent against the mainstream view has been completely shut out.

who's with me?

Perhaps dropping leaflet pdfs of PubMed literature would help. Nothing like the Journal of Neglected Tropical Diseases to catch up on while on the potty.

Given Ebola's "symptoms," I think the biggest reason for skepticism is the lack of Taco Bells in West Africa.

It may exist but even if it does it is no danger to North Americans. We are privileged.

Not so much privileged as literate. It is absolutely staggering how little a lot of these people understand because they lack the most rudimentary education.

After years of civil war (which included war crimes) certain governments in west Africa don't have much credibility to begin with.  Given the low literacy rate and lack of schools it's also possible that a fair number of people in the region don't really understand what a virus is.

This.

The difference between skepticism and denialism is the same difference between rationalists and believers.

I'm well aware of that but I'd like to know: do they think their government is hiding knowledge of aliens? Did their leader get killed by a gunman on the grassy knoll?

A skeptic, when confronted with proposition "X," will not immediately counter with "not X." That is still taking a position, after all. A skeptic will merely say, "X may or may not be."

A contrarian, on the other hand...

Well technically, I guess he's right, in his limited world view, it doesn't exist.  I guess it'll continue to not exist, until it does and then hes hooped. Don't think I have any sympathy for him either.  Too stupid to live.

When your body temperature rises, they say it is Ebola. So I honestly don't believe Ebola exists. There could be a lot of other diseases killing people."

In his defense, I can imagine a lot of other diseases getting mistaken for Ebola, right up until you start hemoraging blood from your eyes, nose, and butt...then I'd start believing... Or get a witch doctor.

Skepticism != denialism.  Skepticism yields to facts.  Denialism does not.
