Vedomosti quoted one source as saying a ban could cost airlines like Lufthansa, British Airways and Air France 1 billion euros ($1.3 billion) over three months...

Said the Russian Business news outlet.

European airlines would lose around $100-200 million per year, less than the cost to Russia of the lost fees.

Said theRussian aviation consultant.

Well, someone's lying.

"Gulfstream has ceased to fulfill its contractual obligations, grounding my jet which had been purchased from it for a lot of money,"

Said the sad Russian billionaire.

Know that feel, Bro.

Oh wait, no I don't.

15,000 tourists are stuck abroad

Sucks to be them.

Putin has also "retaliated" against sanctions by banning certain food imports. I believe US poultry was the first to be banned.

Somehow I don't think making food more expensive in your country is going to have the chilling effect he thinks it will.

So what are they going to eat in Russia exactly? Back to traditional Russian foods that grow near the farking arctic circle? Have fun eating nothing but borscht, rye, millet, and onions, and the occasional comrade that didn't make it through the winter and gets thrown in the pot.

Russians don't require sustenance in the forms most of us would recognize in order to survive. Getting involved in one violent, shirtless road rage incident caught on dashcam per day = 3 square meals here stateside.

Not necesarely.

One is only accounting for additional fuel costs.

The other might be accounting for the fact that no-one will use said flights if it takes 3 hours longer (or however much longer it would take).

It seems to me like Russia's goal is to separate themselves from the West.  They see the writing on the wall that the debt obligations in the US and Europe are going to destroy their economies, and are trying to minimize the impact that collapse will have on their economy.  Cut off the chicken now, when it's optional, instead of having the chicken cut off at a later, non optional, date.

Putin is playing to the classic russian tradition of Ultranationalism. They don't care about being exposed to the Western world, because the Russian people are superior to it in every way, and oh - look, some nice elbow room in Ukraine and Poland.

Russia imports 40% of its food.

Granted, much of the products that will disappear from grocery stores will only be missed by upper middle class city dwellers and expats, who aren't Putin's base of support anyway.

2014-08-06 06:55:41 PM
Food as in everyday food will not be affected. 80 percent of everything Russians eat is produced in Russia. Luxury foods, however - some cheeses, fruits, etc - that will be noticed. But people who eat that aren't Putin's main support anyway.

No. Putin is butthurt because the world laughed at him for farking up the Olympics, then slapped him with sanctions (that are seriously farking with Russia's economy) when he dicked around with Ukraine. They aren't treating Russia like a superpower (because it isn't), and Putin's throwing a temper tantrum.
