I'm assuming Early Brooks was named after Jubal Early, the unrepentant Confederate general who was a big believer in white supremacy.

What a prize.

They then transported the couple across state lines, into South Carolina, where they were joined by five other Klansmen and whipped them for "crimes" ranging from adultery, failure to attend church, and illegally distilling whiskey.

This man was a monster.

NC city renames street honoring Klansman who flogged people for not attending church

Damn, that is one terribad headline, right there.

I first assumed that they had renamed a street *to* honor a Klansman who flogged people for living in sin, not attending church and distilling whiskey.

Had to read the article to realize that they were re-naming it *from* being a street named to honor said Klansman.

In my defense, it *is* NC.

Well, they didn't rename the street, they changed the namesake, from a KKK member to a Civil War Photographer.

And to think, where I come from, just over the mountains in east Tennessee, it is considered a man's God-given right to run a still and make some money to put food on the table for his family without the got-dam revenue-ers comin' around trying to keep a man from doin' that honest work.

I don't even drink whisky anymore.... there was an incident...
But if I don't stand up for the whisky drinkers or the gin drinkers, who will be left to say something when they come for my beer, rum, vodka and the occasional aperitif or digestif.

It was also just as racist as before, anti-immigrant, anti-Catholic....even more ignorant than the first time around.   Funny but their leader, David Curtiss  Stephenson, was convicted of raping, killing and cannibalizing a young white woman.

BTW, I gotta wonder how many white girls appearing in BBC videos today had great, great, great grand pappies who were confederate soldiers or Klansmen.

Man, that is some unadulterated, industrial-grade bullshiat right there. Where do you get this stuff? The "early 1900s" (actually post-World War I) Klan arose in opposition to immigration, and peaked DURING Prohibition. Sure, they were politically drys, but that was boilerplate 100 Percent Americanism. They didn't object to Italians and Jews because they drank; they objected to them because they were Italians and Jews (and therefore Communists).

The WCTU and the Anti-Saloon League had nothing to do with the Klan.

The first and third waves of the Klan really didn't have a stance on booze, unless it involved black people drinking it and rapin' all the white wimmins.

PBS

The Anti-Saloon League
The ASL, under the shrewd and ruthless leadership of Wayne Wheeler, became the most successful single issue lobbying organization in American history, willing to form alliances with any and all constituencies that shared its sole goal: a constitutional amendment that would ban the manufacture, sale and transportation of alcohol. They united with Democrats and Republicans, Progressives, Populists, and suffragists, the Ku Klux Klan and the NAACP, the International Workers of the World, and many of America's most powerful industrialists including Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and Andrew Carnegie - all of whom lent support to the ASL's increasingly effective campaign.

The association legitimized the Klan in many southern communities, the success of the ASL gave the Klan something to show that their goals were universal and attainable.

We all owe a debt of gratitude to Jubal Early, though. Because he was such a poisonous, ambitious little shiat, he talked Ewell out of driving his ordered attack home on the first day at Gettysburg. Without Early, Meade might have lost Cemetery Hill and had to abandon his entire position.

That doesn't make them a militant arm of the Temperance movement. The ASL was a single-issue group that took money from anyone who would give, and meted out political pain to anyone who got in its way, on that one issue. The Klan just made temperance one of the (minor) parts of their campaign for 100 Percent Americans (aka white, Protestant, native-born). Anyway, the Klan's resurgence had barely begun by the time the ASL had pretty much sewed up Prohibition. Once they got the income tax passed in 1913 (because up until then most of the federal budget was paid for by liquor taxes), they were in. The only reason they didn't get the 18th Amendment passed until 1919 was World War One getting in the way. The Second Klan didn't even exist until 1915, after the ASL had already won.

I thought the article's headline was a bit off too. I then noticed some of the headline links on the page:

"NYC Sikhs demand justice after local man is mauled in hit-and-run and called 'terrorist'"

The man was either mauled by a car or an animal ran into him, mauled him, and ran off.

"WATCH: Gay reporter questions archbishop accused of sexually harassing male priests"
